Difference Between Salsa and Pico de Gallo
Pico De Gallo and Salsas are both crowd-pleasing dips that pack a tropical punch. Although the term Pico De Gallo and Salsa is used loosely in our household, there is a big culinary difference.
- Pico De Gallo - Traditional Pico De Gallo (Salsa Fresca) recipes are made with fresh fruits and raw vegetables and never cooked. It is considered salad or filling.
- Salsa - May be cooked and pureed with fresh or canned tomatoes. Salsas are mainly a dip.
This easy Salsa recipe is quick to make and only requires a handful of ingredients like fresh fruits and raw vegetables. No cooking is required.
The main difference is the texture, depending on how chunky you like to prepare fresh pico de gallo or your favourite fresh salsa recipe!
Here are a couple mango-forward bowls I am genuinely obsessed with from the blog! Both these recipes can be made plant-based and vegan!
Ingredients and Substitutes
The best way to make a spicy mango pico de gallo full of tropical flavors start with fresh ingredients.
- Fresh Whole Mango - When it comes to making homemade salsas, choose ripe mangoes such as Ataúlfo' mango from Mexico or Carabao mango, also known as the Philippine mango. These kidney-shaped fruits are richly yellow in color with a tender melting and aromatic consistency flesh. The pit is thin. The sweetness of the mango is the hot summer days perfect snack when eaten alone, delightful dessert flavour or a delicious dip with fresh tomato salsa.
- Fresh Spicy Jalapenos - Pickled jalapenos are no match for fresh jalapeno peppers' crunchy and firm texture. Aged jalapenos get hotter as they get older. For a sweeter profile, try Habanero pepper or Serrano Pepper.
- Yellow Bell Pepper - Green, Yellow or Red Bell Pepper are also nice
- Roma Tomatoes - These types of fresh tomatoes are more slender and firm. I like Roma's compared to other types of tomatoes since they have fewer tomato juices and liquids.
- Fresh Lime Juice - Avoid bottled lime juice because it lacks flavour, is bitter and contains limonin, a process known as enzymatic bittering. Fresh lime juice is bright, citrusy and vibrant.
- Purple Onion or White Onion
- Sea Salt
- Fresh cilantro
- Chili Peppers Powder or Cayenne Pepper chili powder
- Minced Garlic Cloves
How to Cut Fresh Mangoes
Juicy mangoes can be a slimy and slippery challenge to cut if this is the first time enjoying this King of fruits this time of year during the summer months.
Simply start with ripe mangos that are a bit firm. Avoid ones that are too mushy. It will be hard to cube and cut into pieces.
With a sharp knife, cut along both sides of the pit, separating the flesh from the pit. You will end up with three sections: two halves and a middle section that includes the pit.
Start with one mango half and make lengthwise and crosswise incisions with a knife. Invert the mango half so that the cubed segments stick out.
To loosen the pineapple meat, run your small pairing knife and cut it between the flesh of the mango and the skin. Repeat on the other half of the mango.
Lay the middle section flat on the cutting board, including the pit. Use a pairing knife and cut it between the flesh of the mango and the skin. And again, between the flesh and the pit.
If you love fresh mangoes, then you will love this vegan dessert made with fresh mangoes! Desserts made with fresh fruit are so refreshing and appetizing!
Variations
Feel free to substitute sweet mangoes for fresh pineapples and customize it into a pineapple jalapeno salsa. Easily create your Mexican recipes, such as peach salsa, mango habanero salsa, or pineapple pico de gallo recipes!
Try mixing up the fruits like this peach mango salsa recipe. It's the perfect way to use up extra fruits and vegetables!
Load up on cilantro if you are a fan of cilantro! You can always leave it out if you are not.
Bulk it up this spicy mango salsa recipe with black beans or chickpeas.
Instructions
Wash and pat dry fruits and vegetables with a kitchen paper towel.
Cut whole Mango into small chunks.
Cut the rest of the raw ingredients (tomatoes, red onions, jalapeño peppers, cilantro and garlic) into small pieces.
Alternatively, if you do not want to hand chop all the simple ingredients, you can also use a good-quality food processor. Here are my picks for the Best Food Processor for Salsa!
Add all the mango salsa ingredients into a large mixing bowl.
Squeeze fresh lime juice and add a dash of salt and pepper and red pepper flakes.
Mix well and combine.
Serve and enjoy this spicy salsa!
Pro Tip: roll your lime on the countertop under your hand a few times to help loosen the lime juices. Alternatively, cut the lime in half first, stick a small fork into the flesh and twist.
If you like your fresh salsa recipe extra hot, depending on the spiciness of your jalapenos, don't be shy to add extra diced spicy jalapeno and include the seeds.
How Long Does Homemade Pico De Gallo Last
Keep fresh Mango jalapeno salsa in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to three days. A friend recommended this Rubbermaid brilliance container. I love that it is clear and 100% leakproof!
The good news is that Fresh Mango Salsa tastes just as delicious the next day! These type of salsas develop their tangy, spicy and sweet flavor with time.
Next time, if you are hosting a Cinco De Mayo party, backyard barbecue, or simply looking for the perfect appetizer and vegetarian snacks on the go, double this fruit salsa recipe. It is piquant, stores well, and can be made ahead of time! It is great party food!
Leftover Salsa Juice?
If your salsa is soupy and has lots of salsa juice leftovers, don't throw it away! This is the good stuff! Instead, strain it and use it to make spicy Bloody Marys!
What To Serve With Homemade Salsa
The easy answer would be corn tortilla chips. However, there are many ways to enjoy this easy Mango salsa recipe such with black beans like this Mango Black Bean Salsa!
Serve this leftover salsa with fresh Mango as the perfect topping to Air Fried Halibut, Salmon or on top of chicken. This healthy snack is also delicious in burrito bowls, in overnight oats or on its own. The flavours are a nice change from creamy guacamole.
