What Is Mango Sago?
Mango Sago is a famous Hong Kong Cantonese dessert. It is a simplified version of another crowd-favourite sweet soup Mango Pomelo Sago Pudding 楊枝甘露 loaded with citrusy pomelo pulp.
Mango Sago recipes are typically referred to as mango coconut milk tapioca pudding. Chunky ripe mangoes, creamy coconut milk, bouncy tapioca pearls, and condensed milk is heavenly. We love adding coconut jelly for extra bite and contrasting textures!
Mango sago pudding is the best easy 4-ingredient dessert to your dessert menu! Satisfy your sweet tooth in 30 minutes.
Here are a couple mango-forward bowls I am genuinely obsessed with from the blog! Both these recipes can be made plant-based and vegan!
Ingredients and Substitutes
A few simple ingredients are all you need for the perfect refreshing dessert.
Fresh Mangoes - To make a successful and delicious mango sago dessert, select fresh ripe mangoes. Although there is a wide variety of mango, not all are alike. For Asian desserts, we like Ataulfo mango's exotic taste and aromatic and golden yellow flesh. They have incredible mango flavor. Choose fully ripe ones. Cut fresh mangoes into large pieces of mango chunks. Reserve some mango pieces to make a mango puree blend with full-fat coconut milk.
Sago - Sago is small tapioca pearls. Mini tapioca pearls are made from edible starch from the cassava root. They are shaped into tiny edible translucent spheres. Cooked tapioca are chewy. I love adding sago to desserts and boba tea!
Follow our tested and true method to cook perfect tiny tapioca pearls every time. Sometimes, package instructions must be more accurate, and the sago balls are either undercooked with white-centred or overcooked and mushy.
Full-Fat Coconut Milk - Full-fat coconut milk is sometimes called coconut cream. It has a thicker viscosity compared to dairy whole milk. We love coconut milk's fragrant and creamy texture in coconut tapioca pudding with fresh fruits. Coconut milk is vegan, plant-based, and excellent for those opting for a vegan diet. If you prefer a lighter texture, choose lite coconut milk.
Oat Milk - We like to add Earth's Own Oat Milk Barista Edition neutral-tasting plant-based milk with our mango mixture. It is creamy while keeping this vegan dessert consistent.
Sweetened Condensed Milk - This sweet reduction of regular milk is a traditional Cantonese-style dessert ingredient. The taste instantly reminds one of yum cha. Substitute with condensed coconut milk if you are vegan. Compared to cow's milk, condensed milk contains 60% less water but has sugar added.
Evaporated Milk - Aka "unsweetened condensed milk." Evaporated milk contains 60% less water compared to cow's milk. Add a good drizzle of evaporated when you are ready to enjoy mango sago. It is condensed milk, which is thicker and contains added sugar.
If you are not following a strict vegan diet or have nut allergies, other substitutes can include fresh dairy milk, half-and-half cream, almond milk, or soy milk.
Pro Tip: Feel free to adjust the creamy thickness of this mango dessert to your preference. Some substitutions will produce a lighter and runnier version of this coconut sago mango pudding.
Coconut Jelly - aka nata de coco, is a chewy, translucent jelly produced by the fermentation of coconut water. This popular Southeast Asia ingredient gives a lovely bite to the dessert!
Most dry goods ingredients, tools and supplies can be purchased at local Asian markets or Asian grocery store or Amazon Online.

Is it even summer if you don't indulge in the juicy sweetness of fresh, luscious mangoes in a Classic HK MANGO SAGO dessert 芒果西米露 ☀️ We love combining fresh mango chunks, refreshing coconut jellies, chewy sago tapioca balls with coconut milk and condensed milk!!
This easy Chinese dessert soup pulls all our childhood heartstrings. I miss heading down the street from my grandma for a late-night treat. Order this at a Chinese restaurant over dim sum lunch with the parents!
If it's your first time making sweet desserts, watch this quick video where I show you have to make this easy dessert recipe!
The cooking process is simple. We are using a few ingredients. You are only cooking tapioca pearls. The rest of the ingredients do not require any cooking.
Boil a large pot of water.
Once the water comes to a full boil, reduce to medium heat.
Add sago and cook for 10 minutes. Stir frequently to prevent the sago from sticking together.
Remove from heat and cover the pot lid to steep the sago for 15 minutes. This foolproof method will guarantee thoroughly cooked sago without the white center.
The residual heat will continue cooking the sago. Once the pearls are completely translucent, drain the excess water using a sieve under cold running water. Set Aside.
Pro Tip: If you still see a small white dot in the center of the tapioca pearls, let it steep for another three minutes.
My favourite part of summer is the mango season! I love its tropical flavours.
Peel and cube four mangoes.
Puree two mangoes into a mango smoothie in the blender.
Reverse two cubed mangoes for the fruity coconut soup. I love biting into the juicy piece of mangoes in the mango tapioca soup.
Add coconut milk, oat milk, condensed milk, mango purée, fresh mango chunks, coconut jelly and cooked sago to a large mixing bowl. Mix well.
Pro Tip: Before opening the can, give the canned coconut milk a good shake so that the full cat coconut cream thoroughly combines with the coconut water.
Pro Tip: Drain coconut jelly from the simple syrup.
Cover and chill in the refrigerator for 2 hours before serving!
Divide the mango mixture into individual serving cups.
Drizzle evaporated milk and shredded coconut flakes if desired. Top it off with more cubed mangoes.
How To Store Homemade Mango Sago
Mango sago dessert can be meal prepped ahead of time. Store the remaining tapioca mango soup in the refrigerator in an airtight glass bottle container for up to 4 days.
The sagos may need to soften at room temperature for a few minutes the next day. Stir before use.
