What is Tiger Milk Mushrooms?
Tiger Milk Mushroom (虎乳靈芝, Hǔ rǔ língzhī) - this edible medicinal mushroom's scientific name is Lignosus Rhinocerotis (Cooke) Ryvarden. It is regularly used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a home remedy for ailments like fever, inflammation, and respiratory ailments like coughs, sinuses and asthma. There are also no known side effects from consuming Tiger Milk Mushroom.
This adaptogenic mushroom polypore (a group of fungi that form large fruiting bodies with pores or tubes on the underside) comes from the same funghi family as LingZhi (Reishi). Lignosus Rhinoceros is found in Southern China and Southeast Asia regions such as Malaysia.
What Does Tiger Milk Mushroom Look Like?
The cap and steam are woody, compacted masses. They are white with a milk-like substance that oozes out when the sclerotium is cut or broken.
This striking looking mushroom is characterized by its unique appearance, with a white, milk-like substance that oozes out when the mushroom is cut or broken.
The name came from folklore that the mushroom grows on the spot where a tigress drips her milk while feeding her cubs.

Ingredients and Substitutes
Nowadays, cooking a pot of nutritious soup is very convenient to support good health and boost essential fluids. Dried ingredients are readily available in convenient soup packs at Asian supermarkets and Chinese herbalists.
I store my dried herbs in an airtight container. I like to portion and meal prep into herbal soup packs for Chinese soup bone broths I frequently make.
Sea Coconut (非洲海底椰, Fēizhōu hǎidǐ yē) - Lodoicea Maldivica is sweet and cool in nature. I can clear away heat and dryness, moisturize the lungs, resolve phlegm, relieve cough and respiratory diseases. The maturity period of African Sea Coconut takes 6 to 7 years; it is more effective compared to Thai Sea Coconut.
Solomon's Seal Rhizome (海玉竹, Hǎi Yù zhú) - Polygonatum Odoratum nurtures Yin, moistens and promotes body fluid, and quenches thirst. Treats fever, dry mouth, and inflammation. Polygonatum Odoratum nature is cooling and is part of the stomach and lung meridian.
Dried Lily Bulbs (百合, Bǎihé) - Lilium lancifolium nature is cold and helps lower heat, relieve coughs, dry throats and other respiratory conditions like chronic bronchitis, asthma, etc. Its properties treat restlessness and irritability and promote restful sleep to improve overall health.
Dried Lotus Seeds (蓮子, Liánzǐ) - Semen Nelumbinis Nuciferae, dried lotus seeds are sweet and promote the Spleen, kidney and heart. Those suffering from insomnia will find comfort in the 'de-heating' properties of lotus seeds. Lotus seeds also reduce hemorrhaging. Enjoy this absolutely delicious Green Mung Bean Dessert Soup that quenches thirst and detoxes the liver!
Fritillaria Bulb (川貝, Chuān bèi) - is a type of perennial, bulbous flowering plant belonging to the lily family. Fritillaria tastes bitter and sweet. It is cool in nature and enters the Heart and Lung organ affinity. Chuan Bei Mu (Fritillaria Bulbs) is another excellent TCM herb to clear hot phlegm and stop chronic coughs. Clearing lung heat by Yin deficiency dissolves phlegm and reduces inflammation and swelling. Try this nourishing and moisturizing stew instead of reaching for cough syrup Double-Steamed Snow Pear with Fritillaria Bulb 川貝燉雪梨.
Dried Chinese Mandarin Peel (陳皮, Chénpí) - Aged tangerine peel is soothing and normalizes your meridians. It helps relieve cold and reduces phlegm, congestion, and stagnation of Qi. It improves digestion, reduces dampness, and promotes spleen functions. Choose well-aged dried Chinese Mandarin peels.
Chinese Almonds (南杏北杏, Nánxìng Běixìng) - Apricot kernel reduces phlegm, moistens the lungs and relieves cough and asthma. South Apricot Kernels are sweet. North Apricot Kernels has a slightly bitter flavour.

Optional Add-On Ingredients
In addition to the medicinal herbal ingredients, consider adding the following ingredients to enhance the flavour and texture of this herbal soup.
Pork Ribs (豬骨, Zhū gǔ) - Pork ribs and pork bones boost a simple TCM soup. Pork bone soup is rich in minerals, vitamins, amino acids and essential fatty acids. Pork is also a rich source of niacin and thiamine, Vitamins B12 and B6, selenium, and zinc. Choose pork neck bones, shank or tenderloin for a less fatty option.
Dried Figs - Figs are another excellent choice for thirst-quenching, moisturizing the lungs and reducing inflammation and heat.
Honey Dates - Candied Jujube adds sweetness and enhances the soup's flavour.
