What Are Hawthorn Berries?
I remember eating these little hawthorn flakes when I was a kid. It was tart, tangy and sweet enough to trick a kid into thinking it was candy! I never knew what a real Hawthorn looked like or questioned where it came from. But I sure loved those little hawthorn flakes wrapped in pink paper.
Hawthorn berry desserts are important winter delicacies in Northern China. This small bright red fruit resembles a tiny apple: white flesh but less juicy than an apple. It is tart with an astringent flavour if eaten raw, so it is usually cooked or made into desserts or candied snacks like tanghulu 糖葫芦.
Health Benefits of Chinese Herbs
There are a lot of health benefits when it comes to Chinese herbs. Medicinal herbs have been used for thousands of years in Asian culture as health tonic beverages.
Regular consumption of hawthorn tea is the perfect way to balance digestive support and healthy bowel movements.
This herbal tea uses simple ingredients of well-known herbs and is a renowned formula commonly used in many Chinese households.
Dried Hawthorn Berries 山楂/红果捞 - Shānzhā
Hawthorn berries (Fructus Crataegi) are nutrient-rich with a tart, tangy taste and mild sweetness.
Traditional Chinese healers use dry hawthorn slices for year-round digestive support.
The hawthorn berry is warm and targets the spleen, stomach, heart and liver. Hawthorn berries are the most often used herb in the TCM treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Shan Zha is also a herbal remedy for digestive problems, heart issues, and high blood pressure (alleviates hypertension), lowering cholesterol and body fat.
Hawthorn should not be eaten on an empty stomach because it is acidic. Side effects include upset stomach pain.
For example, Bao He Wan 保和丸 is an over-the-counter Traditional Chinese Medicine that helps stimulate digestion, aid the immune system, remove retained food and regulate stomach function was first recorded in the Danxi Xinfa 丹溪心法 in 1481. The chief ingredients of these pills are the hawthorn plant and pinellia ternata rhizome (Zhi Ban Xia, 制半夏), used to treat spleen deficiency encumbered by dampness and internal retention of phlegm and thin mucus.
Jujube fruits are sweet and warm and enter the heart, spleen, and stomach meridians. It tonifies and improves the digestive system's motility. Choose unpitted red dates because their seeds inherently calm the mind and promote relaxation.
Ziziphus jujube's edible fruits are highly nutritious and contain plenty of vitamin C and minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, iron and magnesium.
A daily cup of tea of Red Date Longan Goji Tea is terrific for a woman's health!
"一日吃三枣,青春不显老。" 紅棗甘甜、溫熱,可進入心脾胃經,養血安神,治療失眠。
Organic Goji Berries 枸杞子 , Gǒuqǐzi
Gǒuqǐzi in TCM, the Wolfberry nourishes the blood and tonifies the Yin by entering the kidney and liver channels. These unique berries are powerful antioxidants that are excellent for healthy vision.
Lycium Chinense is rich in polysacharides, betaine, sesquiterpenes, vitamin A, B-1,2, C, calcium, phosphorus, iron, zeaxanthin, physalein, and linolein acid. Gou qi zi belongs to warm-type constitutions.
A ¼ cup serving of fresh goji berries is only 111 calories. Goji berries are high-antioxidant superfruits that prevent free radicals from damaging DNA, lipids and proteins. There are 18 amino acids in goji berries, while apples only have 16.
Known as Matrimony Vine Fruit for its aphrodisiac effect, this wonderful tonic herb promotes longevity and youthfulness, brightens the eyes and moistens the lungs.
If you love organic goji berries, try adding goji berries to your oatmeals or Energy Raw Bars.
