    • Whole Apples 蘋果
    • Whole Snow Pears 雪梨 
    • Fresh Figs or Dried Figs 無花果
    • Sea Coconut (Lodoicea maldivica) 海底椰
    • Apricot Kernels 南北杏
    • Dried Lily Bulbs 乾百合 
    • Dried Lotus Seeds 蓮子
    • Polygonatum Odoratum 玉竹 
    • Pork Shank 豬展 Pork Tenderloin 瘦肉

    Optional Ingredients

    • Dried Honey Dates 蜜棗

    Apples and Sea Coconut Soup Health Benefits

    Traditional Chinese Medicine believes eating more nourishing foods in autumn and winter is advisable.

    Apples and Snow Pears nourish the lungs, stomach, and Yin and quench thirst. The natural and refreshing sweetness is suitable for children's taste buds too! 

    You will also love this easy recipe if you love soup made with apples and snow pears or this Snow Pear and Chuan Bei stew.

    Lily Bulbs are sweet and promote the spleen, kidney and heart. It is calming, and help reduces insomnia. 

    South and North Apricot Kernels reduce phlegm, moisten the lungs and relieve cough and asthma. 

    Sea Coconut (Lodoicea Maldivica) is cooling and clears heat, dryness, cough and phlegm. It also protects Yin and moistens the lungs. Don't be mistaken; Sea Coconuts are not born on the bottom of the sea but on wild fruit trees in Thailand. 

    Figs are another excellent choice for thirst-quenching, moisturizing the lungs and reducing inflammation and heat. 

    Solomon's Seal (Polygonatum Odoratum) nurtures Yin, moistens and promotes body fluid, and quenches thirst. Treats fever and dry mouth, and inflammation. Polygonatum Odoratum nature is cooling and is part of the stomach and lung meridian.   

    I typically eyeball the quantity of the dry herbs used. I roughly grab a handful of the above ingredients from my airtight container.

    This apple, snow pear and sea coconut drink is naturally sweet and does not need the addition of rock sugar. 

    If you insist on sweetening further, consider adding a few Red Dates. Red Dates are blood-nourishing without the sugar content of dried honey dates.

    Pro Tip: Sugar increases the dampness and heat in the body.

    Herbal ingredients and dry goods can be purchased at your local Asian grocer, Chinese herbalist or Online.

    Moisturizing Chinese Apple Sea Coconut Soup 雪梨蘋果海底椰玉竹無花果湯

    How To Cook Moisturizing Chinese Apple Sea Coconut Soup

    Wash and rinse Chinese herbs and dry ingredients. 

    Soak the herbs for 20 minutes in a small bowl to remove traces of impurities. This will help remove dust and debris. Rinse and set aside in a small bowl.  

    Wash apples and snow pears and pat dry with a kitchen paper towel. You do not need to peel the skin if you prefer not to. I like to peel the apple skin and the snow pear skin because I am afraid of pesticides. 

    Peel, core and cut apples and snow pears into chunks. Cut the chunks into smaller or large ones, depending on the pot size. 

    Parboil the pork shank or tenderloin in a medium pot to remove the impurities. Rinse with cold water. Set aside.

    Double Stew Method 

    I typically double-stew my Chinese dessert soup recipes in the Buydeem Health Beverage Maker. 

    It is easy to use, and I do not need to watch the water boils for long hours of cooking time. 

    Simply put all the ingredients into the stew pot and fill the main kettle with 1.5 litres of water. 

    Turn on the stewing "bird nests" function. It is automatically set to 30-minute intervals.

    Stovetop Method

    If you cooking this sea coconut soup over the Stovetop. 

    Add all the ingredients into a large pot not made of stainless steel like this Perfect Pot. Although not all Chinese herbs react with metal, it is best not to use a metal pot when making Chinese medicinal herbal soups.

    Cover ingredients with cold filtered water and boil at high heat.

    Once the hot water is boiling, reduce heat to low heat and continue cooking for 90 minutes.

    Enjoy this hot. The soup ingredients are perfect for eating a side dish too! The cooked pork shank goes perfectly with some Chinese Chili Soy Dipping Sauce.
