Difference Between Salsa and Pico de Gallo
Pico De Gallo and Salsas are both crowd-pleasing dips that pack a tropical punch. Although the term Pico De Gallo and Salsa is used loosely in our household, there is a big culinary difference.
Pico De Gallo - Traditional Pico De Gallo (Salsa Fresca) recipes are made with fresh fruits and raw vegetables and never cooked. It is considered salad or filling.
Salsa - May be cooked and pureed with fresh or canned tomatoes. Salsas are mainly a dip.
This easy pico de gallo salsa recipe is quick to make and only requires a handful of ingredients like fresh fruits and raw vegetables. No cooking is required.
The main difference is the texture, depending on how chunky you like to prepare fresh pico de gallo or your favourite fresh salsa recipe!
Ingredients and Substitutes
The best way to make a spicy pineapple pico de gallo full of tropical flavors start with fresh ingredients.
- Fresh Whole Pineapple - Chopping a whole pineapple into small cubes is easy. You can also buy pre-cut pineapple or fresh cored pineapples from the supermarket. Avoid using canned pineapples as they are soft with some mushy spots.
- Fresh Jalapeño Pepper - Pickled jalapenos are no match for fresh jalapeno peppers' crunchy and firm texture. Aged jalapenos get hotter as they get older. For a sweeter hint try Habanero peppers or Serrano Peppers.
- Yellow Bell Pepper - Green, Yellow or Red Bell Pepper are also nice
- Roma Tomatoes - These types of fresh tomatoes are more slender and firm. I like Roma's compared to other types of tomatoes since they have fewer tomato juices and liquids.
- Fresh Lime Juice - Avoid bottled lime juice because it lacks flavour, is bitter and contains limonin, a process known as enzymatic bittering. Fresh lime juice is bright, citrusy and vibrant.
- Red Onion or White Onion
- Sea Salt
- Fresh cilantro
- Chili Peppers Powder
- Minced Garlic Cloves
Variations
Feel free to substitute sweet pineapple and customize this pineapple jalapeno salsa. Easily create your Mexican recipes, such as peach salsa, mango habanero salsa, or mango pico de gallo recipes! Try mixing up the fruits like this peach mango salsa recipe. It's the perfect way to use up extra fruits and vegetables!
Load up on cilantro if you are a fan of cilantro! You can always leave it out if you are not.
How To Cut A Whole Pineapple
The easiest way to cut a pineapple is to lay the pineapple down on its side on a cutting board.
Cut off the pineapple's top and bottom using an excellent sharp knife.
Stand the pineapple up and cut it in half down the center.
To remove the core, take the edge of your knife and line it up with the edge of the core and slice down inward.
Cut both halves of the pineapple into quarters and then cut half-inch slices down.
To loosen the pineapple meat, run your knife and cut it between the flesh of the pineapple and the skin.
If you want to make a pineapple bowl, after you cut it in half, take a spoon and run it along the inside where the flesh meets the skin of the pineapple.
With a sharp knife, cut both ends of the core. Continue to loosen the meat with the spoon until it is released.
Instructions
Wash and pat dry fruits and vegetables with a kitchen paper towel.
Cut whole pineapple or pre-cut pineapple without core into small chunks.
Cut the rest of the ingredients (tomatoes, red onions, jalapeño peppers, cilantro and garlic) into small pieces.
Alternatively, if you do not want to hand chop all the simple ingredients, you can also use a good-quality food processor. Here are my picks for the Best Food Processor for Salsa!
Add all the pineapple salsa ingredients into a large mixing bowl.
Squeeze fresh lime juice and add a dash of salt and pepper and red pepper flakes.
Mix well and combine.
Serve and enjoy in a pineapple bowl made from pineapple shells.
Pro Tip: roll your lime on the countertop under your hand a few times to help loosen the lime juices. Alternatively, cut the lime in half first, stick a small fork into the flesh and twist.
If you like your fresh salsa recipe extra hot, depending on the spiciness of your jalapenos, don't be shy to add extra diced spicy jalapeno and include the seeds.
