Richmond has not seen quality Taiwanese cuisine in a long time. Recently, a few has popped up here and there. First there was Uncle Lu 安可盧萬巒豬腳 and now Maji Taiwanese Stir Fry 麻吉台式熱炒 opened beside Nan Chuu G Men. Maji Taiwanese Restaurant is a casual fare with small dish tapas, drinks and late night. The decor at Maji reminds me of Lu Sang Taiwan 呂桑食堂 in Taipei. But of course, don’t expect Yi-Lan 依蘭 cuisine!
Steamed Clams with Luffa: a simple light dish with Chinese okra and clams.
Deep Fried Mushrooms: Light breaded and flash fried. However it is not very well seasoned. I still prefer Jade Restaurant more.
Century Egg Tofu: A cold appetizer with firm tofu and layered with century egg and sprinkled with bonito flakes. This is one of my favorite Taiwanese cold appetizers.
Cod with Soybean: I always loved steamed fish. The fish is moist and tender. Because it has a natural sweet flavor, it is easily enhanced with some minced and stir fried soy beans and soy sauce of topping.
Chicken with Chili Sauce: Tender chicken strips with a sesame chili past sauce. The chicken isn’t spicy and barely has any chili oil.
Although not every dish is very outstanding, but Maji Taiwanese is a good spot for a light fare, sharing amongst friends and late night hang out. Sometimes, you just don’t want bubble tea.
