Osmanthus Honey Milk 桂花牛奶: 早春晴朗 The Early Spring Cdrama Recipe
Luke spends most of The Early Spring being impossible. Then he makes Flora a cup of osmanthus milk, and half the internet went looking for dried osmanthus. This Osmanthus Honey Milk Recipe 桂花牛奶 is the version you can make in four minutes on a Tuesday. It works with dairy or soy milk, and it's exactly what TCM would pour you once autumn nights turn cold.

You'll get the scene that started the osmanthus milk craze, once you have a taste. We cover the TCM properties of osmanthus, honey, milk and soy milk, and why this combination suits the dry, cold stretch after White Dew. There's a sourcing section for T&T, Costco and US Asian grocers, with freezer prep for a family and cost per mug against a café latte. Plus a dairy versus soy table, four variations, ten FAQs and a printable recipe card.
We pinpoint both episodes where Luke makes it, Episode 6 and Episode 11, and what each cup says that he won't.

- Osmanthus Honey Milk 桂花牛奶 (The Early Spring Cdrama)

The Osmanthus Milk Scene in The Early Spring 早春晴朗
The Early Spring 早春晴朗 premiered on Youku and Netflix on August 26, 2026. Jing Boran plays 欒念 Luan Nian (Luke), the razor-tongued creative director, and Sun Qian plays 尚之桃 Shang Zhitao (Flora), the rookie who outlasts him. Twenty-four episodes, a six-year secret office romance, and one very quiet drink.
The drink is 桂花牛奶, osmanthus milk, and Luke is the one who makes it. It first appears in Episode 6, the morning after their first night together, when the man who can't say anything kind sets a warm cup in front of Flora instead. No speech, no explanation, just breakfast.
By Episode 11, the cup has turned into a statement. Luke makes osmanthus milk for Flora and pointedly doesn't make one for his friend, which is about as close to a public declaration as a secret office romance allows. Viewers noticed, and the osmanthus searches followed.
The drama's own recipe is fussier than you'd expect. Dried osmanthus gets coated in syrup, dried again, then scattered over the milk, so you taste sweetness first and the flower barely at all. Hong Kong media swapped the syrup for honey, which is faster and, frankly, better.

Why Osmanthus Honey Milk Works in TCM
Osmanthus blooms in September and October, which is why it perfumes every Mid-Autumn table. TCM files it under autumn for a second reason. The season belongs to the Lung, and the Lung's enemy is dryness (燥).
After White Dew, that dryness arrives with cold nights attached. Moistening foods tend to run cool and warming foods tend to run dry, so you want a cup that does both jobs. Honey and milk moisten, while osmanthus warms and moves qi so the mug doesn't sit cold in your stomach.
That's the principle behind my White Dew 白露 TCM food guide: moisten the dryness without putting out the fire. This is food therapy, not treatment, so anything persistent belongs with a doctor or registered TCM practitioner.

Ingredients and Chinese Herbal Benefits: TCM Properties
Dried Osmanthus (桂花, Guì huā) is pungent and warm, entering the Lung, Spleen and Kidney. It warms the middle, disperses cold and transforms phlegm. In a milk drink, it's the warm counterweight.
Honey (蜂蜜, Fēng mì) is sweet and neutral, working on the Lung, Spleen and Large Intestine. It moistens dryness, tonifies the middle and soothes a scratchy throat.
Milk (牛奶, Niú nǎi) is sweet and neutral, entering the Heart, Lung and Stomach. It tonifies deficiency and generates fluids. If dairy leaves you bloated, TCM calls that dampness, and soy is your fix.
Soy Milk (豆漿, Dòu jiāng) is sweet and neutral, working on the Lung, Spleen and Large Intestine. It moistens the Lung without the heaviness dairy carries for some constitutions. Hong Kong drank it for breakfast long before oat milk had a marketing budget.

Ingredient Notes and What to Look For

Buy dried osmanthus that's golden to pale orange and smells like apricot the moment you open the bag. Brown, dusty flowers are old stock and taste like a tired tea bag. Pick out stray stems, since they turn bitter in hot water.
Osmanthus honey (桂花蜜) is honey steeped with the flowers, and sweet osmanthus sauce (糖桂花) is the flowers preserved in syrup. Either one works here, but the sauce runs sweeter, so taste before adding more. T&T stocks both in the jam and condiment aisle near the dried flowers.
For plant-based soy milk, choose unsweetened and calcium-fortified. Canadian cartons say "soy beverage" because federal rules reserve "milk" for dairy, so don't let the label throw you. Whole dairy milk gives the silkiest foam.

Buying This in Canada and the US
T&T keeps dried osmanthus in the dried flower section, usually beside the chrysanthemum and rosebuds, with jars of 糖桂花 nearby. Grab tremella and red dates on the same trip for two of the variations below. A 250g bag of tremella runs roughly $9 to $12 for about fifteen heads, and red dates sit around $11 to $14 for 500g.
Costco covers the bulk basics. The big jar of honey and the multi-packs of shelf-stable soy beverage earn their cart space, and a 4L milk jug makes sense for a family. In the US, H Mart and 99 Ranch carry the same osmanthus and sauce, and Costco US is the same story on honey and soy milk.
Rough cost per mug at the time of writing: about $0.20 of osmanthus honey, $0.40 of milk and a few cents of garnish. That's under a dollar, against roughly $7 for a café osmanthus latte in Vancouver.
For a family of four, coat four glasses, warm a litre of milk to 50°C, and pour. Go lighter on the honey in the kids' glasses, and never use honey for anyone under one.
Freezer prep here is about the variations, not the base drink. Pitted red dates and soaked tremella base both freeze for two months, so the thicker versions below are ready when you are.

How to Make Osmanthus Honey Milk
Coat the cup. Spread a teaspoon of osmanthus honey or sweet osmanthus sauce (糖桂花) around the inside of your glass, letting some catch along the rim. Every sip starts with flower and honey before the milk arrives. It also looks like you tried harder than you did.
Pour the milk. Warm 240 to 250ml of whole or low-fat milk to about 50°C (122°F), which is warm to the touch and easy to sip straight away. Any hotter and you flatten the honey's aroma, which is the whole reason it's in the cup. For an iced version, fill the glass with ice and pour in cold milk instead.
Finish and stir. Scatter a pinch of crumbled dried osmanthus over the top and stir gently to pull the honey off the sides. That's it. Luke's version presumably came with more brooding, but the method is the same.
For soy milk, use unsweetened, calcium-fortified soy and warm it gently to the same temperature. Soy catches on the pot faster than dairy, so stir as it heats. No thermometer? If you can hold a finger in it for three seconds comfortably, it's ready.
Flora would approve. Luke would pretend not to.

Storage and Make-Ahead
Osmanthus honey and sweet osmanthus sauce keep for months in the cupboard once opened, as long as you use a dry spoon every time. Wet spoons are how honey jars go sour. Make each mug fresh, since it takes four minutes and reheated milk never tastes the same.
Variations
Swap the milk base depending on what your body is doing this week.
| Base | Texture | TCM nature | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whole milk | Silky, best foam | Sweet, neutral | Dry throat, evening mug |
| Unsweetened soy milk | Lighter, nutty | Sweet, neutral | Dairy bloating, dampness |
| Half tremella, half milk | Thick, spoonable | Sweet, neutral | Dry cough, dry skin |
Osmanthus tremella milk: simmer one soaked tremella head in 500ml water for 45 minutes until it gels, then replace half the milk with it.
Ginger osmanthus soy milk: add two coins of ginger while the soy milk heats, and it tastes like a Cantonese breakfast shop at 7 a.m. Iced osmanthus latte: pour infusion, honey, espresso and cold milk over ice. TCM frowns at ice after White Dew, so save it for a warm afternoon.
Red Date Osmanthus Milk: Simmer four pitted red dates in the milk for ten minutes, let it cool to 50°C, then pour it over the honey-coated glass. It's for anyone with permanently cold hands.
Iced Latte: Coat the glass, add ice and a shot of espresso, then top with cold milk. TCM frowns at ice after White Dew, so save it for a warm afternoon.
For café foam at home, a handheld milk frother does in 20 seconds what a whisk does in two sore minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Luke spends most of the drama refusing to soften, then quietly makes Flora a cup of osmanthus milk, so you're allowed a few questions of your own. These are the ones that come up most when you're standing in the T&T dried flower aisle, wondering whether brown osmanthus counts.
Luke does. He makes Flora her first cup in Episode 6, the morning after their first night together, and in Episode 11 he makes one for her and not his friend.
A latte adds espresso. The milk version is caffeine-free, which makes it an evening drink.
Yes, heated gently. Homemade soy milk must be boiled thoroughly before drinking, since raw soybeans aren't safe.
There's a stubborn folk rule against it, but no good evidence behind it. Cantonese breakfast shops have sweetened soy milk for generations.
A warm, caffeine-free mug is a gentle wind-down habit. For real insomnia, see a practitioner.
Yes, from age one. Never give honey to babies under twelve months because of the botulism risk.
Osmanthus, honey and milk in food amounts are everyday ingredients. Check with your care provider if you have any concerns.
T&T, in the dried flower section, or online.
There's no need. Each mug takes about four minutes, and the osmanthus honey keeps for months in the pantry.
Apricot, warm honey, a faint tea note. Nothing like a candle.
The Early Spring Episode 6 osmanthus milk scene is the morning after Luke and Flora's first night together. Instead of saying anything tender, Luke sets a warm cup of osmanthus milk in front of her at breakfast, which is the moment the drink becomes theirs.
In The Early Spring Episode 11, Luke makes osmanthus milk for Flora and pointedly doesn't make one for his friend. For a couple keeping their relationship secret, it's about as public as Luke gets.
T&T stocks dried osmanthus in the dried flower section, with osmanthus honey and sweet osmanthus sauce (糖桂花) nearby. In the US, look at H Mart or 99 Ranch, or buy online.

PrintOsmanthus Honey Milk 桂花牛奶 (The Early Spring Cdrama)
A five-minute Osmanthus Honey Milk 桂花牛奶 inspired by the drink Luke makes for Flora in The Early Spring 早春晴朗. Osmanthus honey coats the glass, warm or iced milk goes in, and crumbled osmanthus finishes the top. Works with dairy or soy milk.

- Cook Time: 2 mins
- Total Time: 4 minutes
- Yield: 2 cups 1x
- Category: Drinks
- Method: Boiling
- Cuisine: Chinese, TCM
Ingredients
- 2 tsp dried osmanthus (桂花)
- 500ml whole milk or unsweetened soy milk
- 1½ to 2 tablespoon honey or osmanthus honey (桂花蜜), to taste
- Optional (drama-style topping)
- 1 tbsp dried osmanthus
- 1 tsp honey or simple syrup
- Ice, for the iced version (optional)

- Homemade soy milk must be fully boiled and cooled to 50°C before using.
- No honey for babies under 12 months.
