L’otus Cake Boutique took over the old Moma Bistro location at 8580 Cambie Road (across Continental Centre at Sexsmith Road). For the dessert lover, this place offers mille crepe cakes with a variety of flavors like fresh mango, strawberries, Blue Earl Grey, Creme Brulee and Match Green Tea. Aside from the classic French cake with alternating layers of crepe, L’otus also offers Nai Dong rolled cakes and other delicious goodies like Mont Blanc and cheesecakes. But it’s not cheap. Mille crepe cakes start at $8.50 to $14.
While waiting for my friend to arrive, I ordered a floral herbal tea with Strawberries. It is appetizing, bright and subtly tart.
Blue Earl Grey: The flavor was intense and aromatic with refined Bergamot and Royal Blue Flower. The first slice was tender and soft. Unfortunately, the edges were hard and chewy. Had it been also soft and moist it would have been a nice alternative to Lady M (even though we can’t get any here in Vancouver!!).
Creme Brulee: Light Madagascar vanilla bean pastry cream with a caramelized sugar topping. The topping isn’t crunchy. I like the nice light flavor profile which isn’t too sweet and perfect for the average Asian taste bud.
Mocha: A nice chocholately latte to round up an afternoon of sweet treats.
L’otus closes early at 6pm and reservation of cakes is highly recommended. I’m looking forward to trying the Matcha and mango mille crepe again and would even overlook the hard edges.
What’s your favorite flavor?

Gabi and Jules is a new pie shop and bakery in Port Moody on 2302B Clarke Street. The shop is owned by Lisa and Patrick Beecroft and is named after their two daughters Gabi and Jules. For those not familiar with their pies, they have been sold in the family’s Caffee Divano coffee shop (Tri-Cities Port Moody, Coquitlam and Burnaby).
Their handmade pies are made with natural, seasonal ingredients and contains no food dyes or chemicals and butter. They do not use shortening in their crusts. Since their eldest has autism, one dollar from each whole pie sold goes to Medicare for Autism Now and the Autism Support Network.
Pies are served in pie tins which customers can bring back or use themselves at home.
I love that there are giant chunks of seasonal fruits. Each pie has a great sweet to tart ratio and isn’t overly sweet. There is a great selection of pie flavors to choose from ranging from the classic apple pie to blueberry nectarine.
Gabi & Jules Pie Flavors
- Strawberry Ginger Peach
- Traditional Apple Pie
- Raspberry Rhubarb
- Blueberry Nectarine
- Blackberry Apple Pie
- Lemon Coconut Blueberry
In addition to pies, this cute little bakery also offers sandwiches, wraps, jams and bake-at-home scone mixes. I love their unique flavors like bumbleberry preserves (mixed-berry), tomato jam, and ginger peach marmalade.
I recommend adding a scoop of ice cream to your slice of pie! Or if you dare, add a slice of cheddar cheese to your apple pie! Bake it slightly to allow it to bake onto your pie. Trust me, it is the best!

Can you believe there are only four weeks left in summer? I can’t neither! The weather has been so hot lately here in Vancouver. The summer fruits, like BC Peaches from the Okanagan, spoils so quickly. We brought a whole bunch from home after winery hoping. The only logical thing to do is make some roasted peach ice cream! I can’t wait to scoop some and enjoy in our new patio with some Peach Thyme Bellini cocktail too!
Honestly, this is the easiest no churn ice cream recipe ever! You need only three basic ingredients to make the base. Adding fruits is optional and there are so many choices.
When peaches are in season, the pureed fruit has such a fresh sweet flavor. It makes the ice cream extra silky and creamy. Use 6 to 8 medium sized peaches, peel, cut and remove the stones.
In a large saucepan stir in sugar and salt in medium heat. Stir occasionally so it doesn’t stick to the bottom. Remove from heat and let cool by placing the pan in a bowl of ice water.
While the peach is cooling down, it’s time make the creamy ice cream. It is so ridiculously easy to make. You don’t need to make a custard. And you don’t need to use an ice cream maker.
Take the whipping cream and whisk to soft peaks form. Save your arms by using Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer. Pulse at speed 6 for 2 mins.
Now that the peaches have cooled down. Place the peaches in a blender, cover and puree. Stir into condensed milk. Fold everything together into the whipping cream. You can also add some extra chunky fruits or nuts into the ice cream.
