Mini Bangkok Hong Kong 小曼谷泰國美食 is located in the old school streets of Kowloon City, a land of many delicious eateries. The assuming facade offers anything but. Each dish has a kick and flavors are not diluted to suit the unadventurous. Mini Bangkok Hong Kong is one of the best Thai restaurants in Kowloon City. There are line ups, long line ups. Deal with it. There are no fancy decor and dishes are monotonously in yellow plastic. Service is spotty, but we don't mind. We've acclimated. There is no way in Vancouver, I can walk down my apartment, make a left and walk 5 mins to find an authentic Thai restaurant full of spices and character. I will find a park, perhaps a hungry bear waiting for my arrival.

Green Papaya Salad: Shredded green papaya, basil, dried shrimp, mint, chili paste, chilies, crushed and sprinkled with chives and peanut all to host their flavor popping fish sauce.

Satay Skewers: Beef and Pork Neck. How can we come here and not have satays. Moist and tender and slightly charred outside.

Spicy Chinese Water Spinach 空心菜: A nice heated stir fried veggies with a dash of chili, garlic and dried shrimp.

Deep Fried Sizzling Oyster Cake: Many complain that it is too fried, too dry on openrice but we disagree. There is a nice crunch and bite compared to the typical watered down, canned oysters cake. There are plenty of fresh oysters glazed in a flavorful batter and sprinkled with salt and pepper.

Tom Yum Soup: Fresh aroma of lemongrass subtle drifts our way as the pot is brought to our table. Underneath we discover a few large head on prawns. The broth is dense although on the salty side. I would perhaps enjoyed it even more should they made it even spicier. The pot itself is difficult to scoop, there are odd corners the spoon would not fit.

Absolutely we would return to Mini Bangkok Hong Kong next time we are in town! Although there is a newer, cleaner, more comfortable newly opened sister Mini Bangkok BBQ around the corner on Boundary Road, I would still probably prefer the uncomfortable stools, flawed decor hole in the wall.
