Person: Hey! Cool you went to Swan Oyster Depot?! How was the cracked crab? It was delicious wasn't it eh? I mean with all that gooey crab roe paste…
Me: I didn't' f#%king have the crab… It wasn't available… The earliest catch wouldn't be until Saturday (today was Wednesday)… Neither was there any uni… EPIC FAIL! After Anthony Bourdain's visit on Layover, all we wanted to do was wait in line for hours and copy cat his order. Lucky for us there was only a 5 minute wait.
There is Elvis and classic rock playing in the background. A row of bar seats greeted us inside with marble counters. A bowl of clam chowder to share. The consistency isn't very thick but has a tasty ocean scent with morsels of calms. Abundant oyster crackers are in a bowl on the counter for your pleasure.
If you love their clam chowder than you will also love Swan Depot's Secret Menu. Off the Menu Stew is Swan Depot's clam chowder base with added clams, shrimps, chopped prawns, crab meat, milk (instead of cream) and finished off with oysters. I'm drooling!
Next up we ordered a combination salad of prawns, shirmp, smoked salmon and trout over a bed of lettuce. Almost everyone had ordered this and it would only be smart to follow suit. It was very fresh and homemade thousand island dressing on the side.
Salmon sashimi served with olive oil, diced raw red onions, lots of capers and lemon juice. Almost like a ceviche cross carpaccio, the freshness was brightened by capers.
This was an excellent afternoon snack over Stella! Plus, these guys can do math quicker than you can whip out your credit card! Oh wait! Swan Depot only takes cash or cheque.
