Salt & Straw is a really popular ice cream shop in Portland, Oregon. Those that live in Portlandia will know this. And for us folks in Vancouver, BC probably know this too during our many road trips down South. It is like the Earnest Ice Cream or Rain or Shine. Anyways, Salt & Straw since now have also invade Los Angeles with their rich, creamy “farm to cone” philosophy.
Their flavors are not common as simple vanilla. Though I would argue a tasty scoop of vanilla ice cream is not that common as normcore as fashion blogs. Instead, their “Classic flavors” include Stumptown Coffee & Burnside Bourbon, Pear & Blue Cheese, Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper, Almond Brittle with Salted Ganache, Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons and yes, Double Fold Vanilla.
Salt & Straw also offers the very best of seasonal Portland’s farmers’ market ingredients for scoops like Carrot Cake Batter Pralined Hazelnut, Caramel Corn on the Cob, Zucchini Bread with Chocolate Freckles and Green Fennel & Maple (if you are in the month of August).
The obligatory ice cream photo with the epitomize ice cream waffle cone Instagram worthy photo is a must. Because how else are you going to prove to Kim and Tyler Malek that you’ve been licking up sweet ice cream cones? And if you didn’t Instagram is, did it really happen?

BETA5 Chocolates Vancouver is one of the best chocolaterie shops in Vancouver. They are known for their decadent cream puffs, artisan award winning chocolates and even Saturday sundaes. BETA5 is located on 413 Industrial Avenue near Chinatown / Main Street Skytrain Station – quite close to Dubh Linn Gate Irish Pub, Torafuku, and Olympic Village. Adding to The Ultimate Summer Cool Down List this summer, we sampled their ice cream sandwich.
BETA 5 Chocolates Ice Cream Sandwich Flavors
Flavors changes weekly. They also became sold out quickly. There is a constant mad rush of people pulling up to the garage to get their hands on these tasty treats.
- Salted Caramel: caramel ice cream, salted caramel sauce, butterscotch sugar cookie
- Mint Chocolate Chip: fresh garden mint ice cream with shaved dark chocolate, dark chocolate shortbread cookie
- Milk Chocolate and Pear: Chai spiced milk chocolate ice cream, pear ice cream, chai-spiced sugar cookie
I love me a good chai latte! So natural, I ordered the milk chocolate and pear ice cream sandwich. It is light tasting and not very heavy. The sweetness was mild and we enjoyed the sugar cookie with a subtle kick.

We recently discovered Frozen Coconut, Be Coconut Water, and Be Coconut Chips at the 2014 Grocery Showcase West and CHFA West 2014. One of my favorite desserts is ice cream. Frozen Coconut Ice Cream is extremely creamy and is made from fair trade ingredients, raw (flash heated) coconut milk. Compared to their competitors, Frozen Coconut also has more coconut milk and less water than their competitors. They use 100% Agave syrup and a touch of Canadian Sea Salt to bring out the flavors. We knew, we liked it but what we didn’t know initially was that Ryan Geni and Kevin Carta both graduated with Honors from Ice Cream University in New York City. Frozen Coconut ‘ice cream’ is perfect for diabetics and those with lactose intolerance.

Frozen Coconut Frozen Dessert Flavors
- Classic Coconut
- Chocolate Mint
- Lemon Meringue
- Mixed Berry
- Orange Cream
Frozen Coconut has six different flavors. My favorite is Classic Coconut. It is clean, rich in coconut flavors and creamy. I like to pair it with some lemon zest and Be Coconut chips. If you have some coconut oil, melt a little and use it as a syrup. On contact onto the frozen coconut ice cream it will freeze and be a little crunchy. Orange Cream is also very good. It is like having a Creamsicle. It is not as creamy as the Classic Coconut however. Chocolate and Chocolate Mint are very similar in flavor. I’ve tried a lot of dairy free ‘ice cream’ but by far I think Frozen Coconut resembles ice cream the closest. Frozen Coconut is perfect for all you health nuts and organic gurus and fast food fans too. It’s for vegans and vegetarians and omnivores of all ages.
Frozen Coconut is available at all Nature’s Fare, select Save-On Foods locations, select IGA locatioins and available at all Vancouver and Kelowna Urban Fare locations. Can’t find Frozen Coconut? Ask the manager at your favorite grocery store and tell them Nomss sent you!

The last day of Vancouver Hot Chocolate Festival 2014 falls on Valentine’s Day. And while most people have booked and planned an evening at the most romatic restaurant in Vancouver, some like us option for dessert first. We happen to be around Bella Gelateria Vancouver and am intrigued to try their gBar – namely chocolate popsicles. Bella Gelateria Vancouver Hot Chocolate Festival 2014 Menu featured a lot of flavors. Each served with Erin Ireland’s To Die For Banana Bread.
BELLA GELATERIA + TO DIE FOR BANANA BREAD
- #06 – “MONKEY’S UNCLE” gBAR made from banana liquer and swirls of “To Die For” Banana Bread crumb. Served with a slice of Erin Ireland’s “To Die For” Banana Bread alongside.
- #07 – “BLACK MAGIC” gBAR flavoured with black sesame and matcha tea. Served with Erin Ireland’s “To Die For” Banana Bread.
- #08 – “THE EVITA” gBAR flavoured with salted caramel – Argentina style. Served with Erin Ireland’s “To Die For” Banana Bread.
- #09 – “LONDON FOGGY” gBAR flavoured with vanilla and Earl Grey tea. Served with Erin Ireland’s “To Die For” Banana Bread.
- #10 – “RED HOT CHILI PEPPER” gBAR flavoured with chocolate, cinnamon and cayenne. Served with Erin Ireland’s “To Die For” Banana Bread.
Bella Gelateria LONDON FOGGY gBAR flavored with vanilla and Earl Grey tea. It isn’t too sweet and has a subtle punch of Earl Grey Tea flavor. I only wished the Popsicle was bigger. Dunk it into the hot chocolate and stir it around. I imagined it to form a dip cone like chocolate crunch coating. But of course it didn’t. Perhaps next year, they can consider this concept! Remember, I coined it!
Erin Ireland’s “To Die For” Banana Bread is delicious but similar to before I wished the slice was slightly thicker. Just to give it more bite and to be dunk worthy. Otherwise it just sort of melts. The flavor is tasty and has a sweet yet savory profile which we liked a lot.
Finally the Dark Hot Chocolate is from Milano. It isn’t sweet. Perhaps just subtle hint of sugar from the dark coco. This is definately different compared to the Thierry’s hot chocolate THE AMPAMAKIA which is made with a rich Ampamakia 68% chocolate.
