After our last visit for Notch 8’s extravagant Canada 150 Afternoon Tea, it’s time to play a game. Notch 8 turns to the imaginative world of classic board games t deliver a playful game board of sweets and savories like scones with clotted cream, delectable savory […]
In celebration of Canada’s Jubilee Anniversary, Notch 8 Restaurant and Bar, invites you to their Canada 150 Afternoon Tea. In honour of the true North strong and free, the private dining room is adored with vintage photographs of Fairmont Hotels across the country and archival images of Canadian Pacific locomotives. History aside, the Canada 150 Afternoon Tea takes you from the green copper roofs, chateau style architecture, grand ballrooms and storied pasts to a culinary journey from the Pacific to the Atlantic. Indulge in delicious Saskatoon berry compote, delectable and distinctively Canadian tea sandwiches including Montreal Smoked Meat and Lobster Rolls, and in-house baked sweets.
To begin, guests select their preferred choice of Fairmont fine tea blend. My favorite continues to be the Fairmont Earl Grey and the 1907 Centennial Blend of kenmare, malty assam and a touch of earl grey. If you prefer to add a little bourbon, we highly recommend the Maple Leaf Cocktail – a cocktail made with Maple Maple (black tea with notes of caramel), Canadian bourbom, maple syrup, lime and apple.
The Canadian journey begins with Maple Panna Cotta, Wild Berry and Oka Scone Saskatoon served with berry compote and birch syrup Chantilly.
Presented in Royal Doulton is a tower of savouries. There is a lot to choose from and everything is so delicious. It is hard to pick which one to try first.
Maple Foie Gras Tourtiere – miniature confit duck savory pie from Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac ; an elevated Calagary Stampede corn dog made with Wagyu beef, blue corn grits and tomato relish from Fairmont Palliser; Lobster Roll from New Brunswick; to the Mini West Coast Club – Dungeness crab, smoked salmon, side stripe prawns, smoked oyster and albacore tuna from our very own Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. And don’t forget the iconic Montreal Smoked Meat from Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth in Montreal and the Peameal Bacon Sandwich made with Canadian bacon and Ontario Cheddar from Fairmont Royal York in Toronto.
The food continues with the presentation of sweet. The treats are presented on a Canadian map. Chocolate dipped Nanaimo Bars from Fairmont Empress in Victoria, BC, Canadian Mini Donuts, Crispy Beaver Tails from Fairmont Chateau Laurier in Ottawa and more.
Canada 150 Afternoon Tea is available between May 1 to September 3, 2017. $59 per person. Children’s menu $29.50 per child (ages 12 and under). Daily sittings 11am, 1pm, and 3pm.
The portion is substantial although all miniature in size. It is artfully crafted and has many great options in both savoury and sweet treats.
Fairmont Hotel Vancouver History Tidbit:

The present Hotel Vancouver first opened its doors in 1939, on the eve of the Royal visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. TWG Tea, an iconic global brand debuts in Vancouver. It is their first Flagship Tea Salon & Boutique in North America. We are so excited that TWG Canada is situated within the downtown core of Vancouver’s upscale luxury retailers! Previously occupied by The Urban Tea Merchant, the space has been completely transformed with Old World luxury decor – gold and brass accents.
TWG Tea opened its first headquarters in Singapore eight years ago. TWG Tea’s exclusive collection includes more than 800 varieties of elegant blends and harvests – has contributed to its impressive expansion into 57 locations in 17 cities, including London, Shanghai, Tokyo and Dubai.
Vancouver TWG Tea Salon & Boutique will not just be a retail venue but also a resource for interested consumers to learn more about teas around the world, properties of different varieties, and the many high quality seasonal tea blends available. The store will also carry TWG Tea exclusive blends such as 1837 Black Tea and Silver Moon Tea; deluxe varieties like the Haute Couture Tea Collection and Gold Yin Zhen; and will integrate a myriad of these signature teas into savoury recipes and exquisite tea-infused patisseries to be at the forefront of tea gastronomy.
TWG Tea President, CEO & Co-Founder Taha Bouqdib says: “In response to demand for exquisite quality tea, TWG Tea continues to extend its reach globally. Our latest expansion will see TWG Tea opening in Canada, a burgeoning market where tea consumption is on the rise with a growing shift towards fine teas among North American consumers. We are looking forward to an extremely exciting year ahead.”
VanSing Distribution Group – owned and operated by Tom and Karinna James – will be the exclusive franchise partner and distributor of TWG Tea in Canada.
Luxury teas and seasonal afternoon tea menus will continue to be offered. The menu will be more expansive since they’ve renovated and expanded their kitchen!
TWG Canada officially opens doors today with a media gala with Coco Rocha in attendance. But before that, we spent an intimate The Perfume of Tea dinner. We started the evening mingling over tea infused cocktails with TWG Tea founders from Singapore – Taha Bouqdib (President & CEO) and Maranda Barnes (Director of Business Development).
- Silver Moon Tea Cocktail: infused sparkling white wine with a touch of berries and yuzu.
- Silver Moon Tea Mocktail: with coconut milk and notes of wild berries.
Sencha Prestige Tea infused wild mushroom soup: paired with delicate herbs, finished with shaved truffles, porcini powder and white truffle oil. Sencha Tea offers a light seaweed-like flavour that pairs well with earthy and fragrant mushrooms.
Pan-Roasted Sablefish: complemented by a dashi broth infused with Meleng FBOP and French Earl Grey Tea. Served with steamed baby nai bai, shimeji and sauteed oyster mushrooms over Korean garlic brown rice.
- Meleng FBOP: Harvested in the foothills of the Himalayan plateaus, these mahogany-coloured broken leaves infuse into a very stimulating cup with a full-bodied and earthy aroma that finishes with a hint of sweetness. A perfect TWG Tea breakfast tea.
- French Earl Grey Tea: A fragrant variation of the great classic, this TWG Tea black tea has been delicately infused with citrus fruits and French blue cornflowers.
Local Free-Range Chicken: brined in Smoky Earl Grey accompanied by butter confit, Grenaille potatoes, served with a red wine burgundy sauce with button mushrooms, caramelized pearl onions, smoked veal bacon, vanilla confit grapes and crispy chicken skin.
Smoky Earl Grey: A royal and sophisticated TWG Tea blend, the ethereal, smoky aroma of incense is complemented by sweet and fragrant citrus fruits in this surprising black tea. A daring combination of Russian and English tastes.
The Iconic Macaron Noir Tea infused dessert with caramel sauce and apples. A decadent and rich sweet treat to end the night.
- Macaron Noir Tea: Throughout history, tea has been served with dainty sweets – sometimes to balance the strength of the infusion, other times to refresh tired spirits in the middle of the afternoon. Now TWG Tea has conceived a black tea blend which encapsulates the mouth-watering flavours of our signature black macaron. Rich, mysterious, satisfying, this marvellous tea will delight tea lovers of all ages.
For my after dinner tea, I optioned for a hot cup of Silver Moon Tea. This TWG Tea blend of green teas accented with a grand berry and vanilla bouquet and a hint of spice is one of TWG’s best selling tea blends.

There are so many exciting changes recently in the landscape in Vancouver with Telus Garden and soon to be opened Trump Tower. There’s something changing at The Urban Tea Merchant and TWG Tea too. But you will just have to wait and see!

Longevity Tea: Mélange of rare white teas which boast a high percentage of downy silver tips. This blend infuses into a royal yellow cup and yields a raw and crystalline flavour, sparkling and fresh. A joyful tea to extend the brevity of existence.
Silver Moon: TWG blend of green teas is accented with a grand berry, predominated by strawberries and vanilla bouquet. Smooth, with just a hint of spice.
Autumn Celebration Tea: Black tea blended with subtle dewy sweetness, cocoa and notes of candied violet. Sensation of a warm rich tea that is quite creamy.
I love going to high tea! It is a nice relaxing environment to catch up and to enjoy some finger sandwiches. We can pretend to be fancy!
We started the day with a new tea arrival called Tukdah. Tukdah is a blend of Darjeeling tea that is aromatic in flavour, racy and vivacious with a short finish, subtle bite and lingering aftertaste.

TWG Tea 2015 Traditional Mooncake Collection Flavors
Constellation: This iconic signature of the mid-autumn festival holds within a golden crust a smooth and elegant Singapore Breakfast Tea infused brown lotus filing, a scattering of roasted melon seeds and an embedded salted egg yolk heart. A timeless favorite and one that is closest to traditional mooncakes sold.
Moonlight: Encased in a lavish brown crust, this exquisite TWG Tea mooncake is filled with smooth black sesame paste infused with Pu-Erh Prestige and sprinkled with black and white sesame seeds around an aromatic sesame paste heart.
Harvest: Wrapped in a perfectly baked golden brown crust. This surprising mooncake features mixed almonds, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts and pecans enveloped in a smooth lotus paste with Brothers Club Tea, a warm and luminescent black tea with notes of nuts, citrus fruit and berries.
Fire: Wrapped in a sumptuous baked crust. This exclusive TWG Tea mooncake is filled with white lotus and rich pistachio paste infused with Paris-Singapore Tea and scatted with dried cranberries.
This afternoon tea is a great way to be introduced to mooncakes. Traditional mooncakes may be too rich for some people given the sweet lotus paste and salty egg yolk. And for those who are looking for a gift, these TWG Mooncakes are packaged beautifully. It will definitely be a warm surprise to be shared with friends and family.
As always, the service and quality of the afternoon tea is top notch. We are looking forward to all the exciting news at The Urban Tea Merchant.
