Olive et Gourmando Montreal is a quick easy soup and sandwich cafe in Old Montreal near Le Westin Hotel. There are long line ups for take out. Table service is quick with plenty of bar counter seats.
Last time we were in Montreal, we had no itinerary, no “Must Eat List”, and no “10 Things to do in Montreal” plan. This time, I find myself combing thru TripAdvisor and Yelp, geo-tagging every restaurant, cafe and little boutique. Perhaps, it comes with age. Perhaps, occupational hazard. I’m always trying to find the next best thing. Yet, I always go back to comfort. It’s like having 20 pairs of shoes but always wearing the two.
It is the last morning before our flight back to Vancouver. God, I miss my own bed and the mild temperatures. I really don’t understand how East Coasters / Montrealers brave their winters. My skin barely survived the brash wind and dehydration. Thank goodness for Laneige Water Sleeping pack, Aesop cleansers and my last minute decision to pack my Aritzia Blanket Scarf.
For a quick tasty meal, we ordered a salad and panini sandwich to share. Had we not went to Cafe Myriade in the morning, I’d probably order another Cappuccino. To be two cups deep before noon while on vacation seems a bit atrocious. I’ll save that for the office tomorrow.
Chicken Salad: daily special salad was the chicken salad with couscous, fennel, celery, apples, roasted almonds and lemon mayo dressing. Crunchy, tart, and refreshing. I must recreate this at home!
The Cubain Panini Sandwich: panchetta, roasted pork, Gruyere cheese, lime, cilantro, chipotle and pickled mayonnaise. Hearty. Cheesy. It wasn’t mind blowing but rather home comfort. Not too crazy pre-flight. I think fellow travellers can appreciate us not ordering a burrito.
If you are not in a pinch for time, wander in Old Montreal. Vieux Montréal city is very charming. So much character and plenty of old architectures, restaurants and Notre Dame Basilique.

Basho Cafe Vancouver on East Hastings, a block east of Victoria Drive. Basho is a cute, cozy Japanese cafe specializing in lunch sets: rice bowls, salads, and sandwiches. This “place” offers a selection of house baked sweets focused on matcha green tea flavors, mochis, and mini kombucha muffins.…
Butter Baked Goods Vancouver is a local bakery and tea room where I’ve drooled over the pages of their cookbook , knowingly I do not have the skills to perfect a sugar cookie. Perfecting caramel bars and chocolate tarts probably takes more than my high school home economic class. I digress. Butter Baked Good is a very pretty and girlie place. And as my Dave would say, just go with the girls. Unlike the romantic fireplace and chandeliers patisseries, Butter Baked Goods has a fun Southern Charm – filled with floral, color, and sparkles. Service here at Butter is friendly. Reservations are required. If you walk in, there probably won’t a table available. There are plenty of free street parking.
Since Butter Baked Goods has such a cute space. It is only fitting that we bring our Fujifilm Instax Mini Polaroid Cameras out to play. I mean how friggin’ cute are these pastel pink, baby blue and lemon yellow Instax Minis? We literally had a Fujifilm Instax Mini Party!

Cucumber and Cream Cheese Sandwiches: The lightest sandwiches. It is best to start with this sandwich otherwise the flavors of the other ones will overpower the light fresh feeling of this one. Or I suppose you can use this one as a palette cleanser.
Curry Croissant: This one is my favorite. I like the suitableness of curry, crunch the celery, cilantro and some chicken bites.
Egg Salad: Your very typical egg salad. But it is always one of my favorites.
Tuna Bun with a chip: This is a fun sandwich because it reminds me adding chips to my burgers. What? You’ve never tried this? You have to try it now! Add a few pieces of say a sea salt and pepper Ruffle chip to your next juicy burger!
Maple Pecan Scone: This is a sweet and nutty scone. Inside there are walnuts and I like how this is not too too sweet but still very earthy!
Raisin Scone: Remember picking and eating all the Kjeldsens Danish blue tin butter cookies? This is how I felt about these scones. Love!
By the time we got to the top tier, we were pretty much full. The dessert tier consists of lemon loafs, chocolate raspberry tarts, Earl Grey butter cookies with lemon cream filling, caramel chocolate bars, a vanilla and chocolate cupcakes. My favorite was the Early Grey butter cookie.
Bottomless tea meant we can enjoy our Buttercream Blend tea a little longer. Tea is perfect in between bites to cleanse your palette. And seriously, how beautiful are these tea sets?
Butter Baked Goods are available for wholesale orders and you can also find then at Whole Foods and Urban Fare. The Homemade S’More and Marshmallows are delicious and perfect for party favors!
Overall we had a really great time at Butter Baked Goods Afternoon High Tea. We would definitely come back and have anther Fujifilm Instax Mini Polaroid Cameras Party. Buy yours today here! You can buy Polaroid films with cute borders with rainbows, Hello Kitty Character, Winnie the Pooh, etc.

Monday’s nights are always hard to find a place to eat. Most restaurants typically close Mondays or Tuesdays. For us, these are the two days we are most tired from work – call it Monday Blues – that we simply don’t want to cook. We made the mistake of going to Kam Ho Restaurant 金豪麵家 to be greeted by closed doors and dimmed lights. But I really wanted their dinner combo with steamed fish. On the other hand, we go to Neptune Wonton Noodle 鳳嗚粥麵 all too often, so that was out of the question… Tonight we decided on Jubilant Restaurant 恩榮小館, which is actually opened by some of the good folks who was from Neptune. You’ll notice some resemblance in the menu.
The restaurant is a cozy place but with questionable interior design – for one matter: carpet. Carpet makes the place stuffy, old and appears dirty with stains. Laminate or tiles would be a much better option. A visit to the Interior Design Show would be helpful. But who am I to complain in this beggar / chooser predicament?
We ordered a dinner combo for two for 27.99: Choice of 2 dishes with a complimentary marinated half chicken and soup.
Daily Soup: Carrots and corn. A little watery but nonetheless tasty.
Braised cod fish and tofu stone pot: a sizzling hot pot filled with lightly coated flash fried cod and tofu, Chinese mushroom slivers and cabbage.
Salt and pepper chicken wings: a crispy skin with decent sized flappers.
Service was friendly and food came out prompt. I saw on their tele that they have lunch specials for fish ball noodle soup plus a drink for under 6 bux. Guess where I’m going for lunch next time?

Tsui Wah Restaurant 翠華餐廳 is a cafe chain cafe located throughout Hong Kong. It serves up comfort food catered to the Chinese palate. During peak hours, expect to share tables. The flagship restaurant in Central has three stories. Sorry no elevators. Order like a local and…
Lan Fong Yuen 蘭芳園 located between Central and Mid Level on Gage Street erected a rickety cafe since the 1950s. Unbeknownst, this Cha Chaan Teng supposedly birthed the silk stocking milk tea 奶茶. We’ve read all about it, on TripAdvisor, The Lonely Planet, blogs…
Kam Wah Cafe Hong Kong 金華冰廳 is a famous Hong Kong Cafe located on Bute Street and very close to the Prince Edward MTR station. This place is famous for having the best pineapple bun and egg tarts. It is constantly jammed action pack with locals and tourists. You are expected to share tables and be patient. Service is minimal, if not rude. You better drink and eat you food fast, because they will take your half finished milk tea away or question why you are eating so slow!
They were featured in numerous news articles and food magazines.
Pineapple Bun with Butter: The buns are served ripping hot and the slab of cold butter starts to melt in front of your eyes. The crust is flaky, a bit crunchy and sweet. The bun itself is a bit yeasty. You may want to press down with your fork on top of your bun before eating. Compact the bun so the crumbs don’t fall everywhere.
Ice Lemon Tea and Milk Tea: The beverage here is average and is not the highlight of the restaurant. Not too bad, not so good. Just drink quickly, else you may not have a chance to finish it.
Egg Tarts: These babies has a flaky crust which is the type I prefer. The filling is firm but creamy with a semi-sweet desire. To be honest, I think egg tart at Hoover Cake Shop 豪華餅店 over at Kownloon City is way better.
