Blue Canoe Waterfront in Steveston, Richmond is always one of my go to places for a beer, a view, and a casual lunch. Service here is spotty – sometimes prompt, sometimes not so good. The food is decent and fair despite what the…
Jennifer Bell and her Bells Bake Shop in Steveston is a cute little shop full of kids furniture and a box full of toys. The decor is a bit miss-matched and lemonade colored walls. Everyone time I’ve passed by this bakery I’ve always…
I wanted to come to Hog Shack Cook House Richmond for a while now. I pass this place by on multiple occasions when I head to Blue Canoe and Timothy’s in Steveston, Richmond. Their patio/open space is quite large for you to enjoy some full on sunshine! But something would always steer me away…. Perhaps this is because I don’t usually see a crowd. Early warning signs?
Finally I came here with some old UBC friends to catch up on life. It was 7pm and we were starving. Hog Shack Cook House Richmond was quite for a Thursday night and we were quickly seated, it took at least 15 mins before we got some water.
We shared between ourselves. There was no way I would be able to own up to a whole entrée myself. We waited a long time before any food came… The food was alright, regular, mediocre, nothing worth waiting for so long… 30-40 mins later…
PULLED PORK PANCAKES $13: After having an orgasmic experience at Red Wagon, I often wondered who could replicate the same fantasy, if not better it. I wanted Hog Shack to wow me, salivate me and charm its way into my stomach. But the 3 Savoury corn and scallion pancakes, served with Bourbon bacon maple syrup didn’t do the trick. The pancakes weren’t as fluffy or buttery as I imagined. Although the pulled pork was soft and delicious it needed more seasoning. For now, I will remain monogamous to Red Wagon.
CHILI CHEESE FRIES $9: A meal on its own. The double fried fries topped with their house chili, diced onions, cheese and jalepeno peppers.
HOG SHACK ST. LOUIS STYLE SIDE RIBS 1/2 rack: $17 / Full: $24: Pork side ribs, which is meatier than the back ribs. The meat did not fall of the bones but it was pretty tasty. We ordered yam fries and sautéed veggies as our sides. The medley of zucchinis, button mushrooms, carrots were soft, juicy and seasoned.
We could not finish everything and we were on a protein – carb overload. We waited again (for a good while) to pay. I’m in no hurry to return to this place. Was it just us or did you have similar experiences here?

What’s not to love about a great open patio space located on the pier next to Fisherman’s Wharf in Steveston. This long stretched patio space overlooks the marina and river traffic! We were looking for a great place to chill while catching some rays after…

What a great way to start off the day with Rocanini Coffee Roaster, Steveston, Richmond. Tucked away in Steveston Richmond, this is not your on your way to work, quick, easy, cheap, grab and go’ coffee shop. I’ve passed by this coffee shop for over a year now, I was dying to try it.
You might begin to know me as the weekend warrior food critic. What I am also a big fan of is interior design and decor. Heck, I even have an art degree in college. From the exterior, the welcome sign is an industrial look which is a perfect use of the building and surroundings of Steveston. The interior space is featured and highlighted with huge windows from top to bottom.
Rocanini, Richmond. As you walk in, you are amazed by the large open space that you see outside. The first thing you will probably notice is the long communal table, chandelier, and most importantly, the consistency of tones. I’m sure there are a lot of restaurants and coffee shops that spent more money on their interior design than Rocanini. The statement I want to make is money doesn’t buy taste.
We came in with a mission to try the unique types of coffee Rocanini has to offer. The first coffee we picked was Cafe Cortado. Simply, this popular drink from Latin America is an espresso with a small amount of milk to reduce the level of acidity. My take on this drink is that it’s rich in flavour that goes down very smoothly. Hope our readers have an opportunity to try this. From my understanding, it is a special of the week.
The second drink is a macchiato. No… This isn’t the caramel macchiato with a tall half-skinny half-1 percent extra hot split quad shot (two shots decaf, two shots regular) with 5 cubes of ice you get from Starbucks. In fact, I don’t know if they are willing to customize it for you, at least I wouldn’t. What’s interesting about this drink is it comes with a small class of Pellegrino. You take a sip of the strong, bold flavored macchiato, then immediately sip the Pellegrino. The contrast is amazing beyond my willingness to describe, go try it for yourself.
Lastly, we enjoyed a lemon meringue pie. I have to be honest and say I’m not a huge sweet tooth, which is exactly why I love this particular pie. Not to sweet, with a creamy filling. It is a perfect complement to the bold flavors of our coffee.
Then you have the apple tart, a graham grumble heaven with apples that are unfortunately a little too prepackaged and the caramel drizzle a little too starchy. Definitely not comparable to the lemon meringue.
In conclusion, Rocanini is an exact representation of Steveston. You do not come here for convenience. This is your little daily getaway from the city. I strongly recommend this escape for those who had a stressful day.
