Shanghai River Richmond 滬江海派料理 | Dim Sum and Xiao Long Bao

What does one think of when they crave Xiao Long Bao (XLB)? Those juicy steamed dumplings most popular to Shanghainese cuisine. Shanghai River Richmond 滬江海派料理, is one of the most popular Shanghainese restaurants in Richmond. It is located on Westminster Highway / No. 3 Road across from Richmond Centre. This restaurant is quite busy and reservations would be a smart choice if you don’t want to wait too long in line.

Shanghainese dim sum offers some unique dishes not usually found in Chinese restaurants. Shanghai cuisine is characterized by the use of alcohol, salted meats and preserved vegetables. Another specialty is the use of sugar – it use proportionally mixed with soy sauce to create a taste that is not so much sweet but savory instead. Breakfast and lunch menus typically consists of delectable like XLB, fried donuts and Soy Milk served either salty or sweet.

Steamed Minced Pork Dumplings aka XLB小籠包: These little dumplings has a lot of soup inside making it quite juicy. Sometimes I find the execution not very consistent as the meat sometimes is kind of mushy and doesn’t conform together. The skin is pretty thin and you don’t find yourself biting into a mouth full of dough.

Salty Soy Milk Soup咸豆漿: This is a breakfast specialty that is often served with fried donuts油條 to soak up the flavorful milk. The soup itself is topped with generous slivers of green onions and chili oil. Pour in a small dose of vinegar to taste. The acid in the vinegar helps congeals the soy milk – solidifying the soy milk half way into tofu state. The denser version of soymilk, which is a meal of itself but like most things best to be accompanied by more fried delicacies. If you fancy something sweet instead, the opt for the Sweet Soy Milk where soymilk is mixed with sugar to create warm concoction to counterbalance the saltiness of the fried donut.

Shanghai Fried Shredded Turnips cakeL One of my favorite Shanghainese dim sum dish. Peeled and shredded radish is mixed together with green onions and salt; wrapped by a fluffy pastry that is quite flaky on the outside after being deep fried.

Goose Liver with Sticky Rice 鵝肝糯米燒賣: I bet you are accustomed to eating Pork Dumplings Shao Mai but have heard little about the Goose Liver with Sticky Rice. The foie gras is mixed into the glutinous rice and wrapped with a thin skin pastry like the pork dumpling. Both foie gras and sticky rice is a very warming ingredient that is to keep your stomachs especially warm during the winter months.

Shredded Chicken with Rice Noodles: A cold appetizer that features shredded chicken with sesame paste sauce. It is light and cucumbers are refreshing. If you like cold appies, be sure to try the Drunken Chicken and the Smoked Fish slices. The Drunken Chicken is traditionally made with whole chicken where the bird is poached gently in a pot of barely simmering water. The water and steam transforms the chicken and releases about a cup of gelatin packed chicken stock and mixed with Shao Hsing Rice wine which than solidifies into a delicate aspic jelly. This jelly strangely hugs each piece of chicken and melts instantly in your mouth! Smoked Fish Slices are marinated with spices to taste ‘smokey’. Smoking with tea leaves creates the strong tasting long after it is chilled.

Spicy Beef Tendon and Brisket: Well marinated and spicy tendons and brisket is very flavourful. The tendon and the brisket is soft and tender.

At the end of the day, there are many more unique dishes to be sampled while you seat and sip some delicious tea! The restaurant is spacious and the staffs are friendly. If you have a larger party, there is also a private party room in the back.
