Jules Casual French Bistro is located on the cobble-paved Gastown streets of Vancouver. It is a classic place full of character and pazazz. Dazzling baroque chandeliers and beautiful bar outlines this room with clean black and white finishes.
We were seated right by the window. I would not have had it any other way. Indulge in a few glasses of my favorite Vouvray. Chenin blanc has a lot in common with Riesling and yet often are so underappreciated. I find them intriguing, with a pulsing acidity yet unctuously sweet (depending on the selection).
To warm us off, complimentary bread arrived and goes perfectly later on with our mussels of the day.
Salmon Carpaccio (special of the day): Fatty salmon sashimi that bounces with each bite. It is the seasoned olive oil and dill dressing that highlights this fish. Served with shreaded onions, cherry tomatoes and capers. Capers must be God’s gift to salmon.
Mussels of the Day 19: in a saffron broth. I can’t pass over saffron. The broth is a little heated and the mussels are plump. Served with a side of crispy fries that are never too greasy.
Duck Breast (special of the day): Again part of the recommended dishes, the duck was perfectly cooked medium rare and plated with mashed sweet potatoes underneath. The sauce was rich and powerful. I sort wished there was something a little acidic to brighten it up. This was a heavy dish and we are thankful for our waiter to hold us back from ordering more.
Melting Chocolate Cake with Ice Cream: I arrived flat and I was expecting a souffle lava cake like dessert. But it was a great dessert that wasn’t too sweet and decadent. Lightly drizzled with caramel sauce.
Sour Cherry Clafoutis: Buttermilk and lemon sorbet that tasted much like calpis. Fresh sweet cherries were suspended in a pancake-like warm batter. This tart dessert was a great way to wake one up from food coma.
Jules is far from casual. It’s sophisticated take on traditional dishes are refreshing in a relaxed environment. If you ever want to order absinthe, Jules is the place to go!
