What do you look for in a restaurant? I longed to be surprised and excited. I want food to be punctuated with flavours and complexities and not simply thrown together. We can came to Wildebeest for a daylight view for their wooden high top tables across from the kitchen… a place where magic happens. As I scrolled thru my Instagram feeds early Saturday morning, I heard Wildebeest calling my name… Come try our brunch!
We were pleasantly greeted and seated in the same seat we were last time for dinner when we had the chicken heart and bone marrow luge.
The menu was charming as it offered more than the traditional English or Continental breakfast. Words of pork jowl, bone marrow, grapefruit leaped off the page.
Pork jowl, long pepper oats, bourbon barrel-aged maple syrup, poached egg 16:
Surprised by the bland looking bowl, we thought oh noes. But a bite into the maple syrup oats and our senses tingled. The sweetness and the warmth of the porridge was comforting. The softness and the saltiness of the pork jowl was enduring. Break apart the yolk and you have a beautiful concoction.
Served with fried potatoes. Crispy. Hard to stop eating. Ask for ketchup that is tangy with a little spice.
Scrambled eggs, bone marrow, parsley salad, toast 15: I want this so bad, but they were sold out. Next time.
Steak & eggs, natural Angus beef bavette, peppercorn sauce, fried eggs 17: In replacement I decided on the steak and eggs. It was as delicious as it was on Instagram. Medium rare, tender pieces of beef with 2 sunny side up eggs. The creamy peppercorn sauce was zingy. Served with seasonal greens. This dish was neither greasy nor too heavy for a mornings meal.
Fresh grapefruit juice 4: Fresh!
So next time, if the wait at Medina becomes too long you will know where to find us.
