I look forward to Spring every year as I brush of the last pow wow from my boots and pack away my snowboard. It is a bittersweet moment but Spring marks the beginning of longer days and sunshine, BBQ season and beach season. I look forward to seeing blooming Sakuras despite severe allergies (hayfever). This year we were fortunate enough to enjoy the The Urban Tea Merchant Sakura Afternoon Tea $30 per head and only until April 30, 2012. The tea set is beautiful and deliciously playful. It is vividly adored with greens, violets, pinks and reds. It is like a flower field of spring blossoms while served with fragrant teas.
The featured tea this season Sakura Westcoast Tea Service includes Sakura! Sakura! Tea. TWG’s Sakura! Sakura! green tea scattered with cherry blossoms petals is a worthy ode to spring! Also try the Geisha Blossom Tea and Paris Singapore Tea to pair with the Japanese inspired West Coast Tea Service. Paris Singapore Tea is a green tea with notes of cherry blossoms and red fruits. The Tea Party Tea is a playful black tea of sweet candied – the packaging is super cute like Alice in Wonderland! One of my favourite was the Eternal Summer Tea – hints of peaches and elegant blossoms.
The luxury afternoon tea petite sweets are selectively infused with tea: macrons, chocolate truffle and chilled jelly are presented on a quilted tatami mat of green-tea infused fresh fruits and served with chevron strawberries.
Savories include my favorite lightly glazed miso-maple sable fish in a soft butter lettuce. It is warm and melts in your mouth. Butter lettuce is a great alternative to regular ones because of its soft velvelty texture.
Open-faced smoked salmon sandwich with wasabi aioli and maple (instead of sake) soy ponzu jelly. The small sliver goes a long way.
Japanese fish crackers, crisp soba noodles with tangy seaweed salad and sesame crumble. The crunchiness reminds me of Japanese snacks and the seaweed is a nice balance.
Do not be in despair if you are unable to fly to Nippon to glaze over Sakuras. The Urban Tea Merchant’s courtyard and patio will sure to suppress any tingling. Pink and white petals blanket the private space and dodge the busy skyline. Sit comfortably under the trees and “picnic” your afternoon away.
Be sure to keep your eyes wide open at upcoming outdoor events and tea-infused Sangrias and chilled drinks. The Urban Tea Merchant is soon upgrading their patio along with extended hours and brunch features. Lounge during the night and enjoy a few sweet treats. The Urban Tea Merchant is brewing with a lot of excitement you won’t want to miss!

There were a few crowd favorites that remained on the menu such as the miso-maple glazed sable fish, chicken cone, smoked salmon ribbon with ponzu jelly. This year Sakura Tea Service included a new concept: dessert sushi. The sushi rice is tea infused with Sakura! Sakura! Tea and layered with sweet tea infused jelly . The tea was fragrant albeit the rice was a tad mushy. The pecan tart and the matcha madeleine were my favorite – neither too sweet and had good bite.
