The 11th annual Taste of Yaletown 2015 event is soon happening between Oct 15 to 29th, 2015. This two week period showcases 26 participating restaurants, offering fixed menu prices of $25, $35, or $45 – a portion of profits going in support of the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. Today, we met at Xoxolat 1271 Homer Street before breaking off into groups.

[image_with_animation image_url=”10281″ animation=”Fade In” img_link_target=”_self”]

Butternut Squash and Chili Soup: A piping hot bowl of soup. We found the soup under-seasoned and a tad too watery. We added a bit of salt and it tasted a lot more delicious. What makes a good butternut squash soup? Warm, creamy, and comforting. Butternut squash soup is quintessential to winter.

[image_with_animation image_url=”10283″ animation=”Fade In” img_link_target=”_self”]

Seared Fresh Scallops: celeriac puree, house-made gnocchi, Swiss chard, king oyster mushrooms, truffled pea shoots. Perfectly cooked scallops were very fresh.

Mason Jar Key Lime Pie: The first bite was very tart. A few more bites you don’t notice it as much. It is very creamy and light.

Chocolate Cherry Sponge Cake: A bitter chocolate cake that is dense with sour cherries.  Tart cherries makes for an irresistible brownie pairing. The brownie itself was somewhat forgettable.

Good Wolfe Kitchen & Bar Vancouver Yaletown | Scallop Carbonara x Calamari

good wolfe vancouver yaletown

Good Wolfe Kitchen & Bar Vancouver is located in Yaletown. It is gold recipient of Best Neighborhood Restaurant and silver recipient of Best Weekday Lunch. Good Wolfe is also 2014 winner for Open Table’s Diner’s Choice. Chef and restaurateur Josh Wolfe creates menus that are affordable and tasty. With about half the menu under @$20, it makes date night super achievable without breaking the bank.

Humus: I liked the smooth consistency of chickpeas, tahini, garlic and olives oil. Sprinkled with a little cilantro.

good wolfe vancouver yaletown

Calamari: Lightly dusted salt and pepper, breaded, and flash fried. Slightly spicy and tender. This was one of our favorites.

Scallop Carbonara with Bacon: At first glance this dish looked packed with scallops. A closer look reveals some fatty bacon chunks. The scallops were fresh and pasta al dente. The bacon was slightly too fatty and greasy making the dish heavier than needed.

Steak Frites: This bavette skirt was tender but the sauce was too salty. We were expecting thinly cut frites instead of french fries that was not crispy enough.

Lemon Meringue Cake: Sugary and tangy. I really liked this dessert and would probably come back to Good Wolfe just for this. There is currently a $59 Dinner for 2 Coupon for Good Wolfe Kitchen & Bar (Reg. $106).

Minami Restaurant Vancouver in Yaletown is sister restaurant to Miku Restaurant in Waterfront. Minami Yaletown has taken over the former Goldfish location. Founded by Seigo Nakamura, both Minami and Miku has been known as the place to go for Aburi sushi. Aburi sushi (flame seared) consists of nigiri sushi with a party seared, partly raw fish toppings. Minami Restaurant Vancouver plays on traditional Japanese techniques inspired with fusion global flavors. Miku on the other hand is seafood focused. Clearly aburi sushi is nothing new to Vancouver Japanese restaurant scene, but the aburi brand has been elevated here. We were excited for date night at Minami Restaurant Vancouver Dine Out 2014.

Aburi Sushi Sampler: Minami’s signature sushi appetizer. Features one of the best aburi sushi in Vancouver. Minami uses battera, pressed sushi techniques to for layers of rice and fresh sashimi before it is flame seared. The Aburi Salmon Oshi Sushi made with pressed BC wild salmon, jalapeño, miku sauce. I love the spiciness and the slight crunch of the jalapeno against the freshness of the fish. Other sushi pieces included hamachi, eel, tuna tataki,  and Sunset Roll with spicy tuna, cucumber, smoked salmon, golden tobiko, kaiware, and mustard sauce.

[image_with_animation image_url=”9911″ animation=”Fade In” img_link_target=”_self”]

Minami Zen: The presentation is beautiful. Bento box consists of a selection of seasonal items.

  1. Slow Roasted Beet Salad: toasted walnuts, crumbled blue cheese, roasted grapes, cabernet-cassis tarragon vinaigrette. I loved the subtle citrus profile from the  calamansi morsels.
  2. Jidori Chicken Foie Gras Gyoza: truffle dashi. This was a rich dumpling with excellent dipping sauce. One for just perfect. Any more it would have been too over-bearing. It makes a great sampling feature.
  3. Saikyo Miso Baked Sablefish: kale goma-ae, yuzu-miso sauce, wasabi relish
  4. So Braised Boneless Beef Shank: warm potato salad, mulled red wine-peppercorn demi

Apple Cranberry Crisp: berry coulis, crème anglaise, salted caramel-miso ice cream.  Caramel and miso is an interesting take on ice-cream, but the combination works perfectly. The graham crumble was light and delicious.

We hope you have a chance to try the Dine Out Vancouver experience at Minami Restaurant. Otherwise, a la carte is always delightful!
