Taipei Railway Station 台北火車站 and Taipei Main Station 台北車站 is one of the main hubs to exchange from Metro to Rail. On our way to Jiu Fen 九份是台灣新北市瑞芳區的一個地區, we had about an hour wait before boarding the train. The Taipei Main Station has a main food court area called the Breeze Center 微風臺北車站 on the second floor and more gift shops on the main floor and basement.
We walked around the area in search of something Taiwanese. Cheesecake and other sweets wasn’t a great lunch time meal. Then we came across Kung Fu Noodles 功夫蘭州手拉麵.
A bowl of beef noodles 紅燒牛肉麵 was perfect for this gloomy day. Prices are reasonable at about 150 per bowl ($5 CAD).
A full open kitchen with 4 chefs continuously pouring out bowls of beefy noodles.
Middle of the restaurant hosts a mini fridge with cold appetizers and marinades.
Oxtail with clear broth and goji berries. The noodles were al dente and the meat was tender.
House Beef Brisket Noodles: I like the darker broth with fuller flavors. The meat was tender and cutting noodles perfect.

Fu Hang Dou Jiang Taiwan 阜杭豆漿 is another ‘best breakfast in Taiwan” places aside from 永和豆漿大王 Yong He Dou Jang Da Wang (which is also kiddie corner from this building). They have done an impressive job of attracting loyal foodies to queue long lines just for a bite of their infamous shao bing (flatbread breakfast sandwiches). We arrived early 7am and already the placed was filled with people. All other stores in this building were still closed and/or staring with envy. Remember to come early because this place closes at 10am.
When we arrived at Fu Hang Dou Jiang Taiwan, we thought the lines weren’t too bad. Mistake. Apparently we entered from the other end and the line wraps around down the stairs to the street level and around the building.
Because line ups are so crazy, Fu Hang even provided a guide on how to line up.
Line ups can be boring. In order to keep patrons engaged and waiting, Fu Hang Dou Jiang Taiwan has provided some visuals on their production line. How they make their delicious shao bings, soy milk and fried Chinese donuts since 1958. Non-stop these chefs pour out batches of hot tranditonal Ninjing goodies: roasted flatbreads shao bing 燒餅 and fried Chinese donuts 油條 you tiao.
This place goes thru crates of eggs daily and people buys their breakfast by the box. No wonder there is such a long line up. This is a good sign that the food is really good.
Thick shao bing with egg 厚燒餅蛋加油條: Fu Hang is most famous for their thick flatbeard with egg 厚燒餅蛋加油條. The flatbread has been roasted to a fluffy, crunchy top and chewy center, added sesame for flavour. Lightly glazed with sugar on top. Inside is a pieace of you tiao and fried egg with scallions. 55NT is not only cheap but very satisfying.
Sticky Glutinous Rice Roll with Chinese donuts, shredded pork floss and preserved vegetables 糍飯糰: A lot of rice and not enough filling in the middle. Tastes very similar to 永和豆漿大王 Yong He Dou Jang Da Wang but slightly more savory.
Salty Soy Milk Soup 鹹豆漿 25NT: Fresh soy milk that had curdled with vinegar and added with you tiao bites, persevered vegetables, cilantro, scallions and chili oil. This is something you must order here.
Brown Rice Drink 米漿: If you are a fan of soy milk, than you must try their rice drink. Sweetly flavoured, it tastes more like a dessert of sesame porridge. Added with peanuts, this is a drink you can not get enough of.
Fried radish cake 蘿蔔燒餅: Shredded radish filled center with a deep fried bun and sprinkled with sesame. This bun is so fragrant it’s intoxicating. The soft savory center with radish melts in your mouth.
Fu Hang Dou Jiang Taiwan is definitely worth the wait, but I often wonder how people rushing to work can afford to stand in line for 30+ mins.

Yong Kang Street is surely a surprise on our trip. This street is an explosion of not only restaurants, but fashion and subculture. Most of all it has the best Yi Lan restaurant Lu Sang Taiwan 呂桑食堂. Tonight was my belated birthday dinner, so you know we have to treat ourselves right. We had a choice of Japanese, Hot Pot, Western, street food, and whatever gimmick we can choose from. I on the other hand, wanted to try authentic Taiwanese cuisine, specifically local Taiwanese YiLan 依蘭. Let me prove to you why we came to the right place at Lu Sang Taiwan 呂桑食堂. We walked back and forth 5 times and missed the entrance, make sure you don`t do the same.
The way it works, you don`t get to sit down before you order. So do your research before you walk in.
We sat down and the waitress told us to self serve our beverage: Yilan Tea. It carried a sweet and sour, citrus note. This is always a good way to start off the meal, to get your appetite going. I regret not buying some to go, which I heard is available.
Taiwanese Red Snapper: This is not on the menu, and it`s only the fresh catch of the day. The secret is it`s freshness, because all they do is steam it with your basic Chinese steaming condiments, green scallion, ginger etc. That`s perfect in my books.
Drunken Chicken: Steamed Chicken served chilled marinated in Chinese Wine: Yes, this is on the menu of many Chinese Restaurants, but not with the note of wine only available. Do not over look this dish.
Red Rice Wine Ang Chow Pork: Another Taiwanese exclusive dish. Meat falls off as soon as you apply any pressure to it. The sauce brings hint of sweetness. The dish itself is rich in flavor and texture.
Sliced Pig Liver: Foie Gras, MOVE OVER. This is a good replacement for duck liver, and I would even argue that it tastes better. It is just as rich so they provided yellow ginger to cut the richness.
Oyster with Soy Bean Paste: This is a good small plate with the soy bean sauce bring the taste and oysters bringing the texture.
Bitter Melon with Pork Belly: I thought this was a weird combo at first but we can`t help but taste white bitter melon. After my first bite I know why it`s such a good match. I often thing pork belly is too rich and oily, but the bitter melon was cutting the richness.
Braised pork rice: Everyone’s no. 1 favorite and it is definitely a comforting bowl of flavorful rice.
There you have it folks, my intention of coming to this restaurant is I was in Taiwan. Take your mind off what other people are eating and experience, because in my mind a lot of things in Taiwan is too influenced by Japan. This is my way of telling everyone that I have eaten authentic Taiwanese food.

How could we not try the stand up sushi bar. Chose from a selection of combination meals and individual selections, there is something for everyone. We recommend starting with the set meal for about 2000 NTD ($66CAD) – a price impossible in Vancouver. Add individual nigiri or grilled seafood if you are still hungry.
Our set menu came with BBQ grilled king crab legs (highly recommend and crowd favorite). The the salt water and sweetness of crab meat radiate.
Grilled mackerel is tender and juicy.
Some kind of light seasoned and seared fish. SO fresh!
Sea Urchin (uni) is a must! One of the freshest uni I’ve had since Japan. The golden cushions is sweet, briny salty, and immensely palatable. Be warned their uni supply often runs out early.
Then arrives the nigiri platter.
Cooked Shrimp: A springy texture over a refreshing sweetness. A rare occurrence.
Farm Salmon: fresh but not special.
Tuna: Melting but slightly chewy at parts. Believe we got a bad cut.
Engawa: a fatty fish slightly torched and sprinkled with a light citrus soy sauce.
Ikura: Individual popping juicy roe. Translucent. Delicious.
Next on the menu was a seafood salad with ponzu soy sauce and sprint greens
Underneath the roe was a calm and fish paste layer.
Miso Soup: filled with shrimp and fish. A giant pot of broth is made in front of you where buckets of shrimp heads are added constantly. The soup is never diluted and literally we can say it is a Fresh bowl of soup.
