Ancora Vancouver recently opened upscale restaurant opening an unique mix of Pacfic Northwest, Peruvian and Japanese fare. Ancora took over the old space from C Restaurant and turned it into an elegant open space. Tonight we were here to celebrate Ancora’s grand opening with beautiful people and delicious food. Ancora has a gorgeous view of Granville Island and the sea wall. It is just a short Aqua Bus ride away!

The raw bar is lead by Master Sushi Chef Yoshi Tabo who returned from a hiatus after Blue Water Café & Raw  and Ki Modern Japanese.  Chef Yoshi Tabo makes sushi so heavenly, I may have trouble ordering elsewhere from now on.

Head Bartender Matt Cooke leads the spirits and specialty cocktails program. Matt previous worked at Tableau Bar Bistro and Homer Street Cafe. The Ancora Punch above is made with two kinds of rum and pineapple.

Executive Chef Ricardo Valverde’s lend Ancora’s menu with Peruvian flare. Chef Ricardo previously worked CinCin Ristorante, Diva at the Met and also at Blue Water Cafe. We are looking forward to coming back here for a romantic date night!

Blue Water Cafe + Raw Bar in Yaletown is consistently awarded Best Seafood Restaurant in Vancouver. Part of the Toptable Group & The Aquilini Group. Blue Water Cafe is part of the dining enterprise along with Araxi in Whistler, CinCin, West, and Thierry Chocolaterie Patisserie. Blue Water Cafe is one of my favorite restaurants for fresh seafood. They have a great selection of Ocean Wise sashimi and sushi. Plus, I love me a seafood tower any day!

Seafood Tower 89: two tiers with oysters, prawns, seared red tuna, salmon tartare, jellyfish, scallop ceviche clams and mussels add chilled lobster (1lb) for 29.

We had the Blue Water Cafe Tower 149 last time for company Christmas party and it was ridiculously delicious. I love the assortment of fresh seafood and really two people can just have this for dinner and call it a night!

Stamina 19.50: fresh crab, barbecued eel, smoked salmon, sweet soy glaze. You could instantly taste the sweetness of fresh crab meat. Imitation crab has nothing on them!

Also on the plate are Nigiri sushi I always order. I love the giant sweet whole scallops and fatty Toro tuna belly. Hamachi yellow tail sushi is also one of my must orders!

Sablefish 36.50:  flaky and fatty fish finished with miso sake glaze, baby bok choy, edamame, quinoa and shiitake mushrooms in yuzu dashi. Honestly, I don’t know why we order another entrée to share. We were so full after all the sushi and seafood tower. But this is such a wonderful dish to order if you don’t order overboard. Problem is, eyes wider than stomach.

We loved every experience at Blue Water Café. The wait staff is also very friendly and food arrives prompt.  Sure the restaurant could use some renovations and the booth seats could be more firm, but Blue Water Cafe is one of the best restaurants in Vancouver.  Book the cellar room for your private and group parties. The space is awesome!

Sushi Mania Japanese Restaurant is a relatively new sushi shop beside AcornThe Fish Counter, and Nomad Restaurant. This tiny restaurant holds roughly around 20 seats. Decor is modern, simple and clean. The menu is quite limited with the most basic and common items: California rolls, Sushi Nigiri, Sashimi, tempura and udon. Prices are reasonable and the fish is fresh.

Mania Roll: Most of their ‘original’ sushi rolls has a California Roll base; then varied with different toppings. The Mania Roll is made with imitation crab meat, avocado, and cucumber with topped with chopped scallops. An unagi sauce like then finishes off the roll.

Agedashi Tofu: Lightly breaded and flash fried. Pretty standard. But I did like that it wasn’t soaked in oil.

Toro Sashimi: fresh and cuts were of decent size.

Tempura Udon: Not a lot of udon noodles. The tempura was a little doughy with too much batter. The broth however was tasty and flavorful.

Overall Sushi Mania is a decent place for sushi if you are not looking for anything fancy. Prices are reasonable and the quality is fresh.

West Oak Restaurant Vancouver in Yaletown has been on our radar for sometime now. West Oak prides itself for locally sourced ingredients:  all natural, grass-fed beef, free range chicken, and Ocean Wise seafood. The high ceiling is brought down by giant heritage wood beams and accent lights. White table tops has a casual and inviting space.

Executive Chef Tim Cuff  worked previously at Aura at Nita Lake Lodge in Whistler. He has also worked at Cincin and at West Restaurant as a sous chef. We are excited to be here tonight for Dine Out Vancouver 2015.

Butternut Squash and Chili Soup: A piping hot bowl of soup. We found the soup under-seasoned and a tad too watery. We added a bit of salt and it tasted a lot more delicious. What makes a good butternut squash soup? Warm, creamy, and comforting. Butternut squash soup is quintessential to winter.

Seared Fresh Scallops: celeriac puree, house-made gnocchi, Swiss chard, king oyster mushrooms, truffled pea shoots. Perfectly cooked scallops were very fresh.

Mason Jar Key Lime Pie: The first bite was very tart. A few more bites you don’t notice it as much. It is very creamy and light.

Chocolate Cherry Sponge Cake: A bitter chocolate cake that is dense with sour cherries.  Tart cherries makes for an irresistible brownie pairing. The brownie itself was somewhat forgettable.
