Ramen Koika is located at 1231 Davie Street (cross Bute). It is across from Stephos. I’m surprised they have been opened nearly two years and I have not heard about them. This underrated Japanese noodle restaurant in the West End deserves some extra love, especially if you are looking for variety with a modern twist. Ramen Koika is sister restaurants with Japanese Bistro Hatzu.
The restaurant has a few 4-top tables in the back and open window bar seating in the front. It is perfect for people watching. You may get some random stranger trying to Instagram your bowl of ramen noodles. But hey, that’s what makes it interesting right?

Ramen Koika menu focuses on Japanese ramen noodles (of course) with Pork or Chicken broth options, Tsukemen dipping noodles, burgers and snacks like Gyoza, Takoyaki and Tornado Potato Stick. It isn’t exactly your typical traditional ramen shops in Vancouver.
Chiba Black Ramen 千葉黒ラーメン 10.95: The broth was creamy and aromatic with black garlic oil. This tonkotsu ramen comes with bamboo shoot, roasted seaweed, a perfect soft boiled ajitama egg, Cha-Shu, black tree fungus, green onion, garlic chip, and of course black garlic oil (inspired by Machida Sensei in Japan) .
Sapporo Miso Ramen 札幌味噌ラーメン 10.85: The Wok Smoky ramen is one of their most popular items. It is theatrical to watch flames go up in the kithen and calls for a great boomerang moment. Option to add stir fried seaweed to the line up of bamboo shoot, ground pork, bean sprouts, green onion, and corn.
Tokyo Tsukemen 東京つけ麺 10.95: This Japanese noodle dish consists of ramen being dipped into a separate bowl of broth. You can choose between spicy or non-spicy – I would definitely recommend the spice. It really isn’t that spicy and has a nice punch. Comes with thick homemade ramen noodle, Shoyu tare, shredded pork, green onion, roasted seaweed, and bamboo shoot.
Okinawa Umi Ramen 沖縄海ラーメン 11.95: A lighter ramen broth made with veggie and seafood. Always add extra green onions to your live fresh mussels, garlic, green pepper and red pepper.
- Tako Wasabi たこ わさび 4.50: Fresh tako marinated with fresh wasabi
- Takoyaki Ball (5pcs) たこ焼き 4.95: Deep fried flour ball, chunk octopus
- Gyoza (5pcs) 餃子 5.50: Pork or Veggie
- Tornado Potato Stick 竜巻ポテト 4.50: Specially cut potato and deep fried with special sauce
Ramen Koika offers generous sized ramen noodle bowls perfect when you are famished. The variety of options with flavorful broths is a huge win for me. Go on! Indulge in that extra ajitama soft boiled egg. We won’t judge.

Sugarholic Cafe Richmond inside Aberdeen Centre is a cute cafe that offers Japanese style pasta, desserts and tea variety. The restaurant itself is ultra girly with fancy (but uncomfortable chairs), sparkly chandeliers, floral accents and a white everything aesthetics. Sugarholic is also part of Estea Berevage […]
Spaghetei Vancouver is a Japanese pasta restaurant located at the end of Robson Street near Denman Street. Spaghetei, itself originated in Aomori, Japan since 1975. The restaurant space itself is bright, open and offers casual dining. It’s been awhile since we’ve last had Japanese style spaghetti, so I was excited to finally try this place.
Spaghetei menu offers a good selection of signature spaghetti pasta and rice dishes including Mentaiko, Barayaki (pan friend beef and onions), clams, scallops, Chicken Peperoncino, etc. There is Happy Hour specials between 11:30 am to 2:30pm where their popular dishes are only $9.80. Remember, they are closed every 3rd Tuesday.
We began the meal with complimentary garlic pesto toast. Slightly sweet and crunchy.
Pork Chili Oil Bread 4.60: A flavorful and rich appetizer. The bowl came piping hot so be careful when you eat it. A nice hint of chili spice paired with tender pork.
Stir Fried Scallop with Garlic Butter 5.60: Very buttery and garlic-y just the way we like it. The mushrooms were sweet and had a nice spongy texture .
Clam 13: Clams, scallop and assorted mushrooms. We liked the clean flavors, abundance of clams and mushrooms with a home-made ginger soy sauce topped with dried seaweed. Sorry, the clams were hidden underneath the seaweed in this photo. The pasta also was deliciously al dente.
Barayaki 13: Pan fried beef and onions with Barayaki Sauce. Barayaki sauce is similar to Teriyaki Sauce but carries sweeter profiles. This is a comforting and homey dish. It is one of the traditional food of Aomori, Japan.
Chicken Peperoncino 11: We liked the crispy grilled Peperoncino grilled chicken. Served with asparagus and broccoli in a light buttery sauce.
Powder Snow Milk Syrup 4.50: Now my friends. Let me tell you that Spaghetei offers snow-like frappe made with shaved frozen milk shaved ice. If you are stuck in long lines from Snowy Village Robson or simply want to avoid crazy lines, there are three flavors to choose from here! I like Match and Matcha Red Bean best!
Creme Brulee 4.80: a generous size of custard torched with a crunchy sugary top layer.

Octopus Garden Vancouver is a small Japanese restaurant run by sushi Chef Sada on 1995 Cornwall Ave. A quick search for the best Japanese restaurants in Vancouver probably may queue you a list with Octopus Garden on it. We’ve came several times to enjoy their collection of bluefin of o-toro and chu-toro a la carte. Tonight we came here for their omakase menu which requires pre-order.
The owner/chef Sada-san is a humble, welcoming and friendly man. He is social with his customers especially if you are sitting at the sushi bar. Of course, the sushi bar is the best place to sit.
To start the evening, Japanese snacks were provided.
- Mirugai sunomono – a refreshing light salad marinated in rice vinegar. A good start to appetize you.
- Wagyu beef lolli – a tender bite that is breaded with panko
- Oyster – fresh raw oyster with ponzu
- Eggplant – marinated grilled eggplant
- Brussel Sprouts – roasted brussles with a light spicy sauce.
Uni Shooter – one of Octopus Garden’s signature omakase dish. Mountain potato, Japanese sushi rice, raw quail egg and some crunchy black wood ear mushroom topped with a minty Shiso leaf and freshly grated wasabi. Mix up all the ingredients before shooting. Fresh!
Mushroom Soup – organic shiitake dobin mushi holds a individual serving of steamed soup. The broth is delicate and the soup contains fish belly morsels and mushrooms. The soup itself is poured into tiny cups and meant to be savored. Personally I’d prefer a giant bowl to gulp down. But that that wouldn’t be artsy now would it?
Green Salad: A simple green salad. Look at how cute the heart shaped cucumber is!
Sashimi: A selection of thinly fresh fish.
- Blue Fin Tuna
- Wild Salmon
- Amaebi spot prawns
- Herring Roe
- Monk fish liver
Dragon roll – Beautiful presentation. A light battered crunchy deep fried tempura unagi eel, asparagus and topped with tobiko. The roll itself was warm and not very flavorful and requires some soy.
Wagyu Beef – grilled teriyaki beef. Tender and flavorful.
Grilled Blue Fin Tuna – a ginormous, generous portion of a fatty tuna. It was delicious but at times too rich to eat alone. You need some rice with it.
Nigiri Sushi Box – A simple four piece box. Each nigiri piece had a good sashimi to rice ration albeit thinly sliced.
- Blue Fin Tuna Toro
- Butter Fish
Dessert – ending the night is a platter of tiramisu, ice cream, macaron and a chocolate cake.
Overall the omakase was a-okay. We still prefer ordering off the menu instead. The omakake menu from Park Restaurant in Montreal and Miku has far better presentation and value.
