Salt & Straw is a really popular ice cream shop in Portland, Oregon. Those that live in Portlandia will know this. And for us folks in Vancouver, BC probably know this too during our many road trips down South. It is like the Earnest Ice Cream or Rain or Shine. Anyways, Salt & Straw since now have also invade Los Angeles with their rich, creamy “farm to cone” philosophy.
Their flavors are not common as simple vanilla. Though I would argue a tasty scoop of vanilla ice cream is not that common as normcore as fashion blogs. Instead, their “Classic flavors” include Stumptown Coffee & Burnside Bourbon, Pear & Blue Cheese, Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper, Almond Brittle with Salted Ganache, Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons and yes, Double Fold Vanilla.
Salt & Straw also offers the very best of seasonal Portland’s farmers’ market ingredients for scoops like Carrot Cake Batter Pralined Hazelnut, Caramel Corn on the Cob, Zucchini Bread with Chocolate Freckles and Green Fennel & Maple (if you are in the month of August).
The obligatory ice cream photo with the epitomize ice cream waffle cone Instagram worthy photo is a must. Because how else are you going to prove to Kim and Tyler Malek that you’ve been licking up sweet ice cream cones? And if you didn’t Instagram is, did it really happen?

UYU Ice Cream is a new dessert shop on 433 Abbott St., Gastown beside Prado Cafe and Tacomio. Similar to Soft Peaks, UYU Ice Cream uses only organic milk and local ingredients. Their flavors changes weekly. Sometimes you will get Earl Grey Tea with Vanilla and have a London Fog twist cone. Other days you will get Vietnamese Coffee and Matcha Green Tea.
UYU offers a variety of toppings like freeze dried fruits like oranges, strawberry, raspberry, other berries; nuts, granola and sunflower seeds. They also have other more unique items like black sesame powder.
I like that they aren’t going down the whole Fruit Loops, sugar high rush type condiments.
There are only two items on their menu: 1. soft serve ice cream 2. ice cream bars. Why complicate matters?!
UYU Ice Cream Prices:
- $4.75 One Topping
- $5.50 Two Topping
- $5.75 Three Topping
Drizzle is complimentary for every order.
Vietnamese Coffee soft serve ice cream with freeze dried raspberry, black sesame powder and black currant drizzle. There was a nice balance of coffee flavors to milk. The black currant drizzle was delicious and not too sweet.
So how does it compare to Soft Peaks Ice Cream? UYU is slightly sweeter. Both are creamy and rich. I liked that they offer completely different toppings and flavors. Why compete when you can have both?
I can just see a whole new purpose of going to Spin Class at Eastwood. Better make it a double!
UYU Ice Cream is designed by Campos Leckie Studio (the smal folks that brought you Small Victory Bakery). Clean, minimalist space focused on geometric designs. It is chic and modern.
There are no tables or seats at UYU. Grab your ice cream to go unless you don’t mind sitting on the window sill.

We recently discovered Frozen Coconut, Be Coconut Water, and Be Coconut Chips at the 2014 Grocery Showcase West and CHFA West 2014. One of my favorite desserts is ice cream. Frozen Coconut Ice Cream is extremely creamy and is made from fair trade ingredients, raw (flash heated) coconut […]

There is something about frozen treats that invokes pure happiness, child like emotions and bliss. The following is a the ultimate summer cool down list of the best ice cream in Vancouver. Each are uniquely sinful and we bet you can’t have just one! In no particular order.

Earnest Ice Cream has finally opened their very own brick and motar shop on Fraser street, after a year selling to farmer’s market and various food outlets around Vancouver. They are known for quality ingredients, delicious consistencies of rich creaminess and special flavours – London Fog, Whiskey Hazelnut. My favorite is apple cider. It is richly aromatic both sensually and tastefully.

James Coleridge is the mastermind behind Bella Gelateria and received training at both the Italian Culinary Institute and advanced masters training at Carpigiani’s Gelato University. La Casa Gelato International | Vancouver (Strathcona) | 1033 Venables St, Vancouver, BC V6A 3R9 | (604) 251-3211
La Casa Gelato International started some 28 years ago and is perhaps one of the oldest ice cream parlors with hundreds of flavors. The pink house filled with waffles and ice cream immediately puts your brain into overdrive and you end up ordering vanilla. Choose from wilder flavors such as garlic, red bean, durian, pesto and your classics such as vanilla, raspberries and chocolate.
Rocky Point Ice Cream & Cafe | Port Moody | 2800 Murray Street, Port Moody, BC V3H 1X2 | 604-461-3726
Summer times calls for Ice Cream. Period. On random days I like to head off to Rocky Point Park in Port Moody for a picnic and a light stroll. On other days, perhaps kayaking or paddle boarding. Rocky Point has a few gems of its own, Pajos Fish and Chips, Boathouse, and of course Rocky Point Ice Cream & Café. Opened since 1997, this place brings you delicious treats, candies and even ice cream for your canine – K9 Doggy Cone.

Creekside Coffee Factory | Coquitlam | 2773 Barnet Hwy, Coquitlam, BC | (604) 554-0100
Creekside Coffee Factory is not a ice cream shop but rather serves dew drip, is their version of vacuum coffee. But if you are looking for an Affogato – Italian, “drowned” – it usually takes the form of a scoop of vanilla gelato or ice cream topped with a shot of hot espresso. What a nice summer treat. A spoonful of ice cream drowned in espresso creates a very refreshing taste to the palate. Coffee and ice cream. The best of both worlds

Ghirardelli Chocolate San Francisco is located by the Fisherman’s Wharf on North Point Street by the water. It is one of the biggest San Francisco tourist attraction and a place for people to get souvenirs. We got some chocolates here for our friends back home. Though to be honest, Vancouver also has these for sale. Inside The Original Ghirardelli Ice Cream & Chocolate Shop there are chocolate machines running like in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I do hope that this is only for display because it being open like that I would really question the sanitary hygiene.
Ghirardelli Ice Cream & Chocolate Shop is super busy. There are constantly tons of kids running around. Their chocolate ice cream is delicious if you are a fan of sweets. The Ghirardelli waffle cones are fresh. I really like the Caramel Sea Salt Fudge Sundae. I like the saltiness that compliments the decadent fudge and caramel.
For souvenirs, we bought couple bags of these variety packs for our friends and family. There are also nicer chocolate gifts in tin cans but if you do a quick price variance you will find that they are overpriced. You are paying simply for the presentation and packaging.
At the end of the day Ghirardelli Chocolate San Francisco is a bit of a tourist trap. When you plan your San Francisco trip it will most like appear at the top of any must do San Francisco itinerary or San Francisco must eat. I’d say if you are in the area, sure why not. I probably won’t go out of my way just to visit The Original Ghirardelli Ice Cream & Chocolate Shop.
