Boulevard Kitchen & Oyster Bar Vancouver at the Sutton Place Hotel launched a new Happy Hour menu that is available from 3:30 to 5:30 pm! The new Happy Hour menu gives us a new reason to work harder and punch out at the end of the day for some delicious drinks and small-plate specials!
Boulevard is conveniently located on Burrard Street, adjacent to Joey Burrard, Lululemon and Scotiabank Theatre Vancouver. I personally love the space Boulevard offers. It is beautifully renovated with an expansive dining room, seated oyster bar and a Parisian outdoor patio (weather permitting). It is casually elegant with a touch of sophistication. It is perfect for those business meetings and after work socialites.
The problem with working in downtown is that sometimes I end up going to the same restaurants and bar that are two steps away from the office. We become a creature of habit and forget our options. Boulevard Kitchen is actually just a brisk 5 minute walk away from Bentall 5.

Personally, I love Moscow Mules. It is so refreshing and a great way to start Happy Hour! Moscow Mules are made with vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice. It’s like a grown-up soda!
Meanwhile, Executive Chef Alex Chen crafted a variety of Happy Hour small-plate selections that are equally as delicious as dinner. A few items will be available throughout the day on their lounge menu or can be ordered as a side to your entree.

- Octopus Ceviche with lime, cilantro, onion, tomato, chipotle tortilla chips $10
- Heirloom Beet Salad with hazelnut, frill lettuce, white balsamic $9
- Clam Chowder with smoked black cod, sawmill bay clam, potato, fennel pollen $9
- Crispy Chicken Wings with fish sauce caramel, sambal chili, pickled vegetables $10
- Crispy Stuffed Olives with anchovy, ricotta, spiced citrus aioli $6
Buck-a-shuck oysters feature a seasonal selection of west & east coast oysters. Served with fresh horseradish, Mignonette sauce, cocktail sauce and creamy white foam sauce. The oysters are plump and juicy. And if you prefer, opt for a seat at the oyster bar.
Octopus Ceviche 10: octopus morsels with a spicy lime, cilantro, onion, tomato marinade. Served with chipotle tortilla chips. Octopus tastes a lot like calamari, just meatier. But it is important not to overcook it. Otherwise it will taste like rubber. Good thing, the octopus is ‘cooked’ in an acidic marinade without heat. So it remains tender. It is fabulous as a side or topped over tacos.
Caesar Salad 8: anchovies, shaved parmesan, olive oil crostini. Nowadays, it is very hard to ever see real anchovies in a Caesar salad. Usually it is an emulsified, pre-mixed creamy dressing is usually used instead of a construction of an authentic Caesar salad as Julia Child describes From Julia Child’s Kitchen. So you can imagine, how excited we were when we spotted actual anchovies!
Julia Child recounts how Caesar Cardini (a San Diego restaurateur; not Caesar Augustus by the way) in 1925 made a trip south of the border to Tijuana, Mexico to avoid Prohibition-era laws and created the Caesar salad.
The original Caesar salad, according to Julia, was made with the inner leaves of a romaine lettuce, tossed with olive oil, lemon juice, Parmesan cheese, black pepper, garlic, and eggs that have been boiled for exactly one minute. Julia recounts how “Caesar himself rolled the big cart up to the table, tossed the romaine in a great wooden bowl… I can see him break two eggs over that romaine and roll them in, the greens going all creamy as the eggs flowed over them.”
Heirloom Beet Salad 9: This salad is as pretty as it looks. Even if you are not a fan of beets you will love this salad! Roasted heirloom beets are sweet and enhanced with a splash of white balsamic vinaigrette. It does not have that raw green tastes. Topped with frill lettuce and toasted hazelnut for texture and extra earthiness.
Crispy Chicken Wings 10: If you are a huge fan of Portland’s Pok Pok chicken wings, than you will love Chef Chen’s fish sauce caramel and sambal chilli wings with a crispy double fried batter. Served with pickled vegetables. I love these chicken wings. I love wings in general, but these chicken wings with fish sauce are robustly flavoured. Tart and Spicy and goes great with beer!
Crispy Stuffed Olives 6: These poppers are the perfect finger food. Olives stuffed with anchovies, ricotta and served with spiced citrus aioli. We bet you can’t eat just one.
Clam Chowder 9: smoked black cod, sawmill bay clams, potato, leek, dill, fennel pollen. A light and creamy clam chowder that is flavorful without tasting too much like the sea. This is perfect for a chilly day or if you just prefer something light to go along with your salad.
Korean Galbi ‘dog’ 10: Mouth watering hot dog made with American Wagyu beef, pickled cucumber, chili paste, kimchi topped with flash fried onions. So delicious!
Fresh Hand-Cut Fries 4: What Happy Hour is complete without some crispy fries? Light and non-greasy. I just wished these were bottomless! Served with pepper aioli.
Happy Hour at Boulevard is one of the best happy hour menus I’ve had in awhile. I love the variety and the Asian inspired fish sauce chicken wings and Wagyu beef Korean hot dog. Most of all, the prices are very reasonable! Given the location, the sophisticated bar and marble high top tables, I will definitely be a regular here! I almost feel guilty for not wanting to share this with you!

Last time I was in Hong Kong, I had to revisit Nha Trang Vietnamese Restaurant Hong Kong 芽莊越式料理. One of the things I love about Vietnamese cuisine is the vivid colors from the ingredients used. Greens from limes. Reds from chilies. Yellows from egg foo young. Etc. It seems Hong Kong is in need of a good bowl of pho; while here in Vancouver, we are in dire need of authentic Vietnamese Food.
Nha Trang has a wide variety of fancy Vietnamese dishes aside from salad rolls, skewers, noodles, grilled seafood, etc. Nha Trang Vietnamese Restaurant has a few locations around Hong Kong (Central Wellington Street, Tsim Sha Tsui Ocean Terminal, ShaTin New Town Plaza I). Maybe I am a bit of a tourist, but I prefer Harbour City Ocean Terminal because of the amazing view the city has to offer. If you are lucky, you may get the table overlooking the Hong Kong Cityline view.
CUA LOT CHIEN CUON 會安軟殼蟹卷 SOFT SHELL CRAB ROLLS 58: Crispy deep fried soft shell crab wrapped with herb salad in a roll. It is paired with crunchy cucumber. This medley of texture is delicious! I love the soft chewiness of the rice roll against the crispy crunchiness of the deep fried soft shell crab. Amazing!
GOI BO NUONG 燒牛柳沙津 GRILLED BEEF SALAD 80: Stir fried slices of marinated grilled beef, charred at their edges. Tossed with chopped cucumber, onion, tomato, chilli pepper and fresh herbs finished with a lemongrass, crushed peanut and lime dressing. This was a very flavorful dish with some heat, acidity and bite. The lime was bright with lemongrass, cilantro, and other herbs.
THIT BO/GA/TOM NUONG XA 香茅串燒 雞 / 牛 / 蝦 GRILLED LEMONGRASS CHICKEN / BEEF / PRAWN: It wasn’t easy to tell everyone to stop eating to let me take a picture. Good thing I am with family. The skewers are infused with lemongrass and a sweet marinate. A mild nutty satay dip is served on the side. The prawns were delicious. Chicken were tender. But the beef was on the chewy side.
BUN CHA CA 河內魚餅撈檬 COLD VERMICELLI BOWL WITH HANOI FISH CAKE: Minced fish cakes are popular Northern Vietnamese appetizers. The fish is minced and mixed with chopped fresh water chestnut and is seasoned with fresh dill. Served with fish sauce and cold vermicelli underneath. It is a refreshing dish amidst a lot of hot, spicy dishes.
BANH CUON 清沅蒸粉卷 VIETNAMESE STEAMED RICE RAVIOLI 65: Thin translucent rice-flour sheets wrap a filling of seasoned minced shrimp and pork steamed parcels. Once steamed, it is topped with deep-fried garlic flakes. All can be wrapped in accompanying crisp lettuce leaf and dipped in our house nuoc nam fish sauce. I’m really looking forward to try the Grilled Beef Wrapped in Pepper Leaves Bo La Lot made with marinated sliced beef grilled in pepper leaf and served with pickled plum and lime sauce.
GOI BUOI 邊和燒大蝦柚子沙律 POMELO AND GRILLED PRAWN SALAD 80: Two jumbo char-grilled prawns, peeled pomelo, shredded cucumber, sliced red onion, toasted cashew nut and black sesame seed, sprinkled with fried shallot and garlic flakes. The pomelo was not bitter and had just the right amount of citrus acidity and sweetness. Everything mixed together was so refreshing against the hot stuffiness lingering in air.
MUC NHOI THIT 香煎釀墨魚 PAN-SEARED STUFFED SQUID 78: Fresh young squid are filled with a pork, chopped squid, garlic and ginger stuffing before grilling. The squid is tender and not chewy. This is one of my favorite dishes from Nha Trang. I love the slightly charred grilled squid flavors.
COM TAM 越南碎米飯 BROKEN RICE PLATTER 70: I love myself a mean rice platter of broken rice. Broken Rice means grains that are not whole, but broken. The texture is less fluffy and a bit nutty. This a popular Southern Vietnamese rice dish and is usually served with barbecued meats and egg dishes. Nha Trang rice platter includes ground toasted rice, shredded pork, grilled lemongrass pork chop and steamed frittata egg foo young.

Earls Port Coquitlam is a chain restaurant with many locations in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. Tho some many shun big box chains away, I unashamedly don’t mind them. I can always trust on the standards and services provided and the food really is pretty good.
When the sun is out it seems like everyone in Vancouver is out dining on a Patio and some patios feels like I am dining on the road side (inhaling exhaust fumes and chewing on dust). The patio space at Earls Port Coquitlam is actually quite nice. It is off the side of a big parking lot, away from the smoky asphalt and has a couple gazebo seats. For the next hour (or depending on how many sangrias juggled), you too can pretend to escape the chaos and bob your head to the tunes…
Dominical Fish Tacos 12.25: two soft flour tortillas, grilled lime and coriander marinated wahoo, mango and avocado salsa, spicy valentina crema. The fish was soft and moist and nicely seasoned. The spicy valentine crema sauce reminds me of ranch mixed with some paprika (something that I can skip). And if the tortillas shells were crispy instead of soft that would be even better.
Santa Fe Chicken Salad 16.50: avocado, black beans, corn, dates, feta and organic greens, peanut lime vinaigrette, crispy tortillas (ours was fettucini), cajun spiced chicken. Lots of proteins, lean meat and complexities brings this salad to approximately a jaw dropping 800 calories according to the My Fitness Pal app. I love everything about this Southern / Mexican inspired salad and it left me satiated for the afternoon.

Ebisu Japanese Richmond, part of the Kamei Group has opened several locations in Vancouver and Richmond. One that we normally frequent is Ebisu Japanese Richmond since it is close to work which makes a great place for Happy Hour. Cheap beer, wings, and also a great place to watch the game. Service here is friendly and the menu offers variety. Sushi quality may not be the finest, average at best, but it is the convenience and late nights which entices us.

Mango California Roll 9.50: A refreshing roll to our usual suspect.
Negitoro Roll 3.95: Sometimes the tuna is sparing but overall taste is not too bad.
Drop by if you are looking for a space to watch the game and some cheap Japanese beer. The sushi rice won’t leave a weird after taste !
