Timbertrain Coffee Gastown Vancouver Instanomss Nomss Food Blog

Timbertrain Coffee Roasters Vancouver is located 311 W Cordova S, Gastown. It is great hipster cafe just around from the Old Faithful Shop and Rowan Sky. Just around the corner is Water Street Cafe.

I love the big window seats at the front of the coffee shop. I love the natural light and the high chairs. It is perfect for people watching and for those cortado Instagram photos. Exposed bricks and high ceilings fill the open space. At the back there are booth seats in a ‘caboose’ like setting.

The coffee it is rich, chocolatety and has a hint of caramel smoothness. I like smooth, earthy and nutty blends. It is definitely on my every growing list of ‘best coffee shops in Vancouver’. Glad I will be working this into heavy rotation. For my guilty indulgences, they have sparkling water on tap! Something Elysian has removed from self-serve access.

Enjoy a pastry or some Matcha green tea Belgian waffles to accompany your coffee. If you prefer, they will heat it up slightly.

And after? Head down to Gastown for some shopping and transition into a nearby restaurant for dinner!

Mosquito Gastown Vancouver is a new dessert and champagne lounge. Mosquito is an upscale, sexy restaurant dedicated to desserts, cocktails and charcuterie. Mosquito is located where the old Oak + Fort location is just outside of Blood Alley. We think owners Alice Wu and Johan Friedrich has a really great concept to offering dessert outside of chocolate lava cake. Mosquito is a perfect date night spot with its dark and sophisticated atmosphere designed by Ste. Marie Art + Design (see Homer St. Cafe, Meat & Bread, Ask for Luigi, Revolver).

[image_with_animation image_url=”11037″ animation=”Fade In” img_link_target=”_self”]

Dessert Tapas are available between 5pm to 8pm for $6 each or 3 for $15. Perfect for that mid-afternoon pick me up! Tasty desserts are made by pastry chef Julianne Hansen who previously worked at Cadeaux Bakery.

[image_with_animation image_url=”11033″ animation=”Fade In” img_link_target=”_self”]

Olive oil and Lemon Madeleine: Freshly baked to order. These baby Madeleines are the definition of warm and fuzzy.  Sponge is ever so subtly sweet with a moist center and dusted with confectioners sugar. After Happy Hour, the Lemon Madeleine is served with olive oil bavarois, sponge, elderflower syrup, and dehydrated grapefruit.

Pistachio Ice Cream: Pistachio genoa sponge, caramelized puff pastry, white chocolate and lemon yoghurt mousseline with pomegranate pearls. Earthy, nutty fragrance balanced with bright acidic citrus caviar. Genoise cake is a very light and delicate.

[image_with_animation image_url=”11030″ animation=”Fade In” img_link_target=”_self”]

Frozen Coconut Snowball: Coconut ice cream with slow roasted passion fruit and shiso. Reminds me of Raffaello chocolate.

[image_with_animation image_url=”11034″ animation=”Fade In” img_link_target=”_self”]

Macarons: New to the menu since Wednesday and are simply divine. On the table are Coconut and Lavender and Oolong tea and milk chocolate. We highly recommend the Coconut and Lavender macaron. Subtly distinctive flavors you can taste. At first bite, it is hard to taste the lavender. After a few seconds, you will start to notice the fragrance and the lavender aroma starts to seep in.

Mosquito Macaron Flavors Available

  • Valrhona dark chocolate
  • Coconut and lavender
  • Red fruits and tonka bean
  • Maple caramel and vanilla
  • Olive oil and rosemary
  • Oolong tea and milk chocolate
  • Roses and lychee

We will be back again to Mosquito as I am sure their menus changes seasonally. This sexy lounge is romantic. It is a great date spot to charm your lady. I’m always game for dessert first!

Water Street Cafe Vancouver is one of those iconic restaurants in the heart of Gastown, right across the steam clock. It is the restaurant where Eloise Chandler and Burke Ryan had their awkward date in the movie Love Happens.

White table cloths and classic Italian and Pacific Northwest fare is what makes up the menu at Water Street Cafe.  We came here for lunch after having soft serve ice cream first at Soft Peaks down the block on Alexander Street.

We love the window seats where we can people watch and get some natural light for photos. I really don’t like using flash. Natural light always wins.

In addition to the Dine Out Lunch Menu we optioned for a classic burger.

Grilled AAA Angus Beef Burger brioche, cheddar 13.95: cheese, double smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, red onion, chipotle mayo, dijon, and cripsy frites. I liked the touch of horseradish in the mayo to give the burger to cut the fat and to give it some zing. The patty was juicy. The bun was toasted and thick.

[image_with_animation image_url=”10247″ animation=”Fade In” img_link_target=”_self”]

Caesar Salad: your typical Caesar salad with Romaine lettuce, fresh grated parmesan. The menu said anchovies. Clearly none was on my plate.

[image_with_animation image_url=”10248″ animation=”Fade In” img_link_target=”_self”]

Rigatoni with Italian Sausage: plum tomato, cracked red chilies, extra virgin olive oil. A rather forgettable dish with underwhelming flavors. The pasta was al dente which is expected.

[image_with_animation image_url=”10255″ animation=”Fade In” img_link_target=”_self”]

Fresh Fruit Sorbet: A nice chilled dessert to end the meal. I enjoyed a light refreshing flavors.

Our visit to Water Street Cafe was a rather disappointing. Aside from the classic yet forgettable meal, there were a lot of fruit flies! When we brought this to the waitress’ attention, she simply shrugged, smirked, said “oh well…” and walked away! Honestly, I was a bit dumbfound by the reaction. Clearly, we won’t be rushing back here anytime soon. Shame.

Shirakawa Japanese Restaurant Gastown is located in the historic Blood Alley next to L’Abattoir. Open since May, I often wonder which restaurant took over the space from Boneta. We finally decided to give this place a try and I’m quite happy that we did. Shirakawa by Itoh Dining is a modern teppanyaki eatery, owned and operated by Keisuku Itoh and Takuya Motohashi. Itoh holds a sommelier certificates in wine and sake and is under the mentorship and guidance with world-renowned Chef Nobu Matsuhisa. Shirakawa Japanese restaurant specializes in Japanese kappo, sushi, teppan grilled high-end Kuroge Wagyu Beef from Japan.

WAGYU TATAKI 18″ snake river wagyu beef, garlic soy and walla walla onions. Beef is tender and very fresh. The onions has been rinsed to take away bite and its sharp taste. I do like myself some raw bloody, beef.

HAMACHI CARPACCIO 16: thinly sliced yellowtail finished with kaiware sprouts and yuzu kosho.

TOFU GOMAAE SALADA 10: fried tofu and mixed greens dressed with black and white sesame. Our waitress recommend this salad and she did not disappoint. The house made sesame sauce is very fragrant and highlights the spinach greens and lightly breaded agesdashi tofu. I’m just so glad this gomaae salad isn’t that wring out spinach you see at your typical AYCE diners.

HOTATE NIGIRI 4 each: I often like to order this as a dessert to finish off a meal. In tonight’s case, we couldn’t help ourselves to encore this twice. Fatty. Sweet. Scallops. Splashed with some nirigi soy.

Shirakawa Japanese Gastown restaurant itoh dining nomss.com

TORO NIGIRI 3.75 each: A fatty piece of tuna belly splashed with nigiri sauce.

Shirakawa Japanese Gastown restaurant itoh dining nomss.com

BUTA RICE 12: fatty pork belly fried rice. This very fragrant rice had us wanting more. Each piece of rice seems to be coated with pork fat but yet it is still dry.

GASTOWN GYOZA 7: pork and mixed vegetables served with jalapeño miso. Although the skin is crispy and gyoza filling was quite juicy, this dish didn’t quite sing to us. The jalapeno miso sauce was spicy but flat. Another option is to request the ponzu soy sauce. For us, we also found it too salty.

Shirakawa Japanese Gastown restaurant itoh dining nomss.com

TEBA 8: fried ginger soy marinated chicken wings. A lightly breaded and flaky wing is how I like it.

We have high hopes for Shirakawa Japanese Restaurant. It is always exciting to find modern teppanyaki restaurant that also cares about maintaining traditional Japanese culinary methods.
