Aki Restaurant, Vancouver (Coal Harbour) | New Location with Modern Decor

Aki Japanese Restaurant was one of my favorites on Thurlow and Alberni in Vancouver Downtown. For one, I felt it offered more traditional flare and cuisine authenticity. You would find a charcoal grill, red lanterms, wooden tables, and tatamis. After that location closed down they have relocated on 1368 West Pender, in Coal Harbour, very close to Lift Bar Grill View, Cardero’s, and Soirette Macaron and Tea.

Aki Restaurant’s new location is upscale and sophisticated and very modern. Definitely a big facelift from its previous life. Plush red booths, big origami lanterns, and chandeliers. Although I cannot recall exactly what the price points used to be, but we all agreed that prices have increased. Nonetheless, service is attentive and friendly.

We started with some few items…
Untitled

Untitled
Chicken Karaage 8.95: This deep fried chicken was rather drunk. You could taste a hint of alcohol (sake perhaps?) in the marinade.

Untitled
Nabeyaki Udon 8.50: Think twice before sharing. This is rather a small bowl with only one tempura prawn and a few small slices of chicken.

Negitoro Roll 4.25

A toro filled maki with ends exploding. Pretty standard.

Ika Shiso Roll 4.75

Untitled
Calamari with Shiso leaves. Shiso leaves or also known as perilla leaves has a minty character abundant in ALA omega-3 fatty acids.

Shio Kara 3.50

Sunagimo 3.50

Tori Kawa 2.75

Tori Hatsu 3.50

Tori Liver 3.50

Scallop Wrap 5.95

Juicy and Tasty. Scallops has a sweet like essence mixed with savory bacon! You can not go wrong.

Everything was pretty good until the end when we ordered two additional rolls during last call. The rice was a bit soft and the rolls were breaking apart. Aside from that it was still pretty tasty.

Dynamite Roll 6.25

Spicy Chopped Scallop 4.50

I like this place for their fresh seafood and friendly service, but I have no urgency to return here unless I am in the area. It is still rather out of the way…

To get my skewer fix I would probably head to Zakkushi Izakaya (Denman or Main Street) or Manzo Izakaya in Richmond.
