I CAFE

I Cafe Vancouver is a Hong Kong style cafe located on Heather x Broadway on the second floor. Back in the day, it used to reside where Whole Foods and Lululemon Lab is on Cambie x Broadway. I think I just dated myself. Nonetheless, I Cafe Vancouver  provides a satisfaction for those craving HK cafe food and aren’t at liberty to travel far. The ‘new’ location is modern and clean. Have to say that the mirrored pillars are more of an obstruction than decorative.

Prices are on the more expensive side and portions are rather small. We came here for late afternoon tea one day and the place was pretty empty.

I CAFE

Portuguese Baked Seafood on Rice: A small shallow stone pot of rice and a few pieces of mussels, code and shrimp. The rice was on  the mushy side and flavors flat.

I CAFE

Pork Cutlet with noodles: A tender piece of fried pork (we asked them to serve on the side so it doesn’t become all soggy). The bowl of noodles literally done with a few bites. And the soup? nothing more than Knorr chicken stock.

HK Milk Tea: Too sweet and not enough tea leaves.

I CAFE

HK Lemon Tea: Watered down tea with lemon.

For the prices and location we expected much more.

Le Marche St. George Vancouver

Le Marche St. George Vancouver

Le Marche St. George is almost like a long lost art of living where friends and neighbours come to gather and pick up milk on the way home, where everybody knows your name. In an urbanized big city and commercialized branding, corner stores lose their […]

Le Marche St. George is a charming rustic market located on St George Street / East 28th Ave (residentially between Main / Fraser). This little haven is a breath of fresh air from your daily high-street chains. There is little signage to draw you into the part cafe, part boutique grocer, neighbor friendly hidden-gem. Operating out from a renovated house, Le Marche St. George somewhat reminds me of something out of an Anne of Green Gables movie – an old world ambiance.

Although this little nook has limited sheepskin-lined bench seating – a small window bay and a table, and one outside bench, neighbors gather here for leisure conversations. Cozy throws and blankets are provided to keep you warm and comfortable during plummeting temperatures.

Couples cuddle together while sipping hot coffee chatting about life / dreams; while accompanied by their gorgeous dog. Even the rain won’t stop them! It is somewhat romantic and endearing as we snapped a photo of them through the windows. I can even envision bicycling on warm summer days to get away from the busyness and bringing home a fresh bouquet of flowers. Kid friendly environment with wooden toys and books for your toddler to make adventures out of.

This boutique grocer offers a variety of goods both locally and internally sourced. Daily staples of milk and banquettes, eggs, produce, organic milk, artisan cheeses, sausages. Eiffle Tower shaped pasta, olive oil, salts (sea, butcher, and gardener), Mission Hill preserves, etc stock their pantry shelves. Virgin hand woven throws, blankets, and scarves; trinkets, perfume and even knitted goods can also be found.

When you stomach is a little empty, fuel up with homemade sandwiches, quiches, and wild mushroom risottos. Menu may vary depending on the day and is noted on their blackboard by the window. If you feel like something sweet instead, they even carry delicious macrons from Kitchening With Carly.

So how is the coffee here you ask? Freshly made espresso beverages are available. We both tried the Americano Espresso – no need for something fancy or the annoying-skinny-this, extra-hot-that, 3-pumps-whatever, 5 minutes type of order.

The coffee served in a modest mug is anything but ordinary. It is strong, flavourful, but not acidic or sour to taste. They know what they are brewing. Hot milk is served in a small bowl. Harney & Sons Tea in a variety of flavours readily available. I hear the Au pain chocolat is to die for!

If you were awed by the cozy café, you would be more astonished by how they transformed their home into something beyond what the exterior of the home offered. It may be cold outside, but the inside completely warms your heart!

Live at Marché St. George becomes modern classic that is rare to find.

Everything about the decor, the details in light fixtures and the furniture makes me think that I would love to buy a house like that! Currently unavailable until further notice but with rent options. I wish I can B & B here…
