Papi’s Seafood Dine Out Vancouver 2020

Dine Out Vancouver is back and in full swing! This annual culinary food even runs between January 17 to February 2 with prix fixe menus at 4 price points- $15, $25, $35 and $45. There are also lunch options at selected restaurants. Where have you booked for Dine Out this year? Papi’s Seafood is amoungst one of my top picks for Dine Out Vancouver 2020.

Papi’s Dine Out Menu is price pointed at $35. If you’ve been following @instanomss on Instagram, then you would have already seen the IG stories and how delicious the food is.

Papi’s Seafood Dine Out Dinner Menu $35

The menu is well valued and Chef Jefferson Alvarez offers you a variety of delicious options to choose from. Option for wine pairing or freshly shucked oysters to start your meal.

APPETIZERS

  • LOBSTER SQUASH SOUP: Lobster crème fraiche, or
  • SEARED WILD MUSHROOMS AND BURRATA: Served with pesto bread, or
  • SEAFOOD TART: Fermented Barley, lobster garum, seaweed aioli

ENTREES

  • SPAGHETTI VOMGOLE: Al olio e pesto, or
  • WILD MUSHROOM RISOTTO, or
  • STURGEON ROAST: Salsa verde, vegetable mille feuille

DESSERTS

  • Rice pudding & Hibiscus bubbles, or
  • Sticky toffee pudding, cereal ice cream

SEAFOOD TART: Fermented Barley, lobster garum, seaweed aioli

SEARED WILD MUSHROOMS AND BURRATA: Served with pesto bread. I loved the lightly sauteed mushrooms warming up my burrata.

STURGEON ROAST: Salsa verde, vegetable mille feuille – a beautiful ombre. The sturgeon is perfectly seasoned and cooked.

SPAGHETTI VONGOLE: Al olio e pesto. Lots of fresh clams and al dente pasta.

Rice pudding & Hibiscus bubbles. This warm and comforting dessert is perfect to end the evening. The hibiscus bubbles are slightly tart to brighten this sweet treat.

Sticky toffee pudding and cereal ice cream reminds me of Milk Bar and Christina Tosi.

Torafuku Vancouver | Lunch Menu

Torafuku Vancouver | Lunch Menu

The Red Accordion Vancouver

The Red Accordion Vancouver

Afuri Ramen + Dumplings Richmond | 阿夫利

Afuri Ramen + Dumplings Richmond | 阿夫利

AFURI RAMEN from Japan is now open in Vancouver (well, Richmond to be exact!) Afuri Ramen + Dumplings is located at 140-7971 Alderbridge Way next to Chunyang Bubble Tea. The Afuri brand was established in 2001 with locations across Japan, Portland, and soon to be opened in Hong Kong. I was excited about last night’s media review, tasting and first look before it opens official at 11 am today January 7, 2020.

The restaurant seats 59. It is spacious, bright with high ceilings. Afuri uses a self-ordering kiosk system. Simply place your order at one of the three kiosks, take your ticket and wait at your table.

Afuri’s signature broth and ramen noodles are prepared fresh daily in-house. The chicken-based broth serves approximately 500 bowls of. 300 lbs of chicken (meat and bones), 3 types of dried fish, kombu seaweed, and plenty of fresh vegetables are boiled at 90 degrees – separating the fat and the clear broth. The fat is later added back to your bowl when its ready to be served.

Another signature of Afuri is their Yuzu Broth (Shio, Shoyu, Ratan, Tsuyu Tsukemen). The yuzu broth is refreshing and fragrant, closely resembling that of the grapefruit, with overtones of mandarin orange.  The intensity and aroma of fresh yuzu is incredible without being overpowering.

Yuzu Shio Ramen 16: This light and refreshing ramen noodle is my favourite. It is fragrant and goes well with the thinner ramen noodles. This would be equally perfect in the Summer months when a typical Tonkotsu would be otherwise too rich and heavy. This yuzu broth is much lighter than Marutama.

Tonkotsu Shio 17: The broth is rich and flavourful with a layer of black garlic oil on top but still lighter than most Tonkotsu broths commonly found in Vancouver.

The chashu pork was very tender and flavour and the optional sides were all quite nice. I especially liked the fried garlic but wished they would have the option to add more finely chopped green onions.

Other Food Options

  • Gohan Rice Bowls: Afuri also offers 4 types of rice bowls ($7-9)
  • Kakuni Pork Gohan (with marinated chashu pork cubes)
  • Tantanmen Gohan (with minced ginger pork
  • Karaage Gohan
  • Kimchee Gohan (vegetarian)

The gohan rice bowls are topped with a slow cooked runny egg, bamboo shoots, frisee, green onion, pickled ginger, togarashi, nori and is generously portioned.

Buta Dumplings 10: The pan-fried gyozas are deliciously crispy with a juicy meaty filling.

Chicken Karaage 7: Nicely deep fried with a crispy coat of seasoning and served with a yuzu kosho egg salad dipping mayo and fried shishito pepper.

Buns: 3 types of buns ($6-8)

  • Kakuni Pork Bun
  • Spicy Chicken Bun
  • Soft Shell Crab (spicy mayo and kimchi)

We also sampled few signature cocktails including

  • Endomame – house snap pea vodka, lemon, egg white and mint
  • Hanami – tequila, aperol, pierre ferrand cognac, lemon, honey and bitters
  • Homemade Gingerale
  • Yuzu Limeade

Overall, Afuri Ramen + Dumplings in Richmond is off to a great start and I’m excited to revisit this again. Arrive early to avoid disappointment as there will be long line ups during the first while of its official opening!

Baroness Bubble Tea Vancouver 小黑糖 – Brown Sugar Bubble Tea

Baroness Bubble Tea Vancouver 小黑糖 – Brown Sugar Bubble Tea

Baroness Bubble Tea Vancouver 小黑糖

Baroness Bubble Tea 小黑糖 from Taipei specializing in brown sugar bubble tea has finally opened in Vancouver (near UBC at MacDonald and Trafalgar). It is their first location outside of Asia. The other location includes Hong Kong, and soon to open Vietnam and Malaysia.

During their soft opening, all drinks are 20% off.

I love that they have oat milk options and they also use Earth’s Own Oat Milk Barista Edition. We love this creamy milk alternative so much that we’ve used it for our own Hojicha Oat Milk Ice Cream Recipe too!

The bubble tea itself is cozy and seats 10 people at most.

Thai Milk Style with Oat Milk: We loved this richly flavoured Thai Milk Tea at 30% sweetness and regular ice. The brown sugar pearls are one of the best in Vancouver with a really good chewy mouthfeel.

Wintermelon Condensed Lemon Brown Sugar with Aiyu Jelly: At first sip I thought this was really sour. So remember to stir/shaken your bubble tea thoroughly. The flavour again was spot-on and very tasty.

They also have other delicious blends like Uji Matcha Latte and Purple Yam. Most of all, I love that they use milk alternatives like Oat Milk for people who are lactose intolerant or simply want to limit dairy intake!

Their menu offers a lot of customization and toppings!

I can’t wait until next time I am in the area!
