Recipe – DIY Holy Crap

Recipe – DIY Holy Crap

There is a certain satisfaction when cooking, baking or making your own concoction of something pre-packaged / store bought. Sometimes it is out of sheer laziness, sometimes it’s a fear from failure that I will either burn, parch, over-bake and be left with […]

Jimoco Cafe & Pasta, Coquitlam

Jimoco Cafe & Pasta, Coquitlam

jimoco00017

Jimoco Café & Pasta bar is hidden in a tiny strip mall in Coquitlam on Austin Ave cross street with Marmot St; easily missed and a recessed parking lot on the major street. This tiny pasta joint offers their 2 for 1 special since grand opening about 2.5 years ago. The sign is still hanging on their store front -most likely used as a marketing tactic. Unassuming from the outside, one may not have ventured inside without a good word of mouth. A lil bird told me that the chef is Korean but had studied in Italy.

Inside you will find both seats along the left and a few tables to the right. Dark wood with red décor light this well light restaurant. The 2 for 1 special offers an wide variety of pasta dishes from spaghetti aglio e olio, pasta parma, to risotto ai porcini. They also offer brunch with eggs benedict, pancake and waffles.

The service was friendly, the dishes came prompt, and fresh toasted garlic breads were served. This came at a great time since we were drooling while deciding what to order when we saw neighbouring tables being brought large sized pasta dishes.

Pasta Parma

jimoco00009
[your choice of linguine or penne] chicken, mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes, black olives and capers in a cream or tomato sauce. We chose penne and tomato sauce. Al dente penne, tomatoe sauce was just right and not too acidic, and black olives were not mushy!

Linguine alle Vongole

Calms in white wine sauce. The linguine were cooked perfectly – al dente; firm but not too hard! The white wine broth was delish with plenty of garlic, cilantro, and olive oil yet still very flavorful of clam juice. It would be nice to see a lil more calms swimming in the pasta tho. Be sure to dip your garlic bread in to soak up the juice!

Spaghetti Alle Polpette

Spaghetti and meat balls. A classic dish. The meat balls were well seasoned but we found it to be a bit dry; perhaps slightly overcooked. But overall pretty good.

Risotto al Funghi Porcini

Oh moi dieu! Oh should I say oh mio dio? This creamy Italian rice dish is cooked in broth to a velvety, rich cream like consistency while mushrooms serenades nicely with the spinach and cilantro.

Less than $35 before gratuity! In the end, 4 pasta dishes are simply too much for 3 girls to polish off. There were plenty of left-overs to take home. Glad we chose to come here for “girls night” – probably not your typically party-lounging-night, but we were much too tired after work to drive all the way downtown. But who says you need to spend a lot of money for a good night or a good meal? This little retreat was homey and the food was delish and extremely comforting. Best pasta in Coquitlam.

Looking forward for our next visit and perhaps a weekend brunch.
