Butter Baked Goods Vancouver is a local bakery and tea room where I’ve drooled over the pages of their cookbook , knowingly I do not have the skills to perfect a sugar cookie. Perfecting caramel bars and chocolate tarts probably takes more than my high school home economic class. I digress. Butter Baked Good is a very pretty and girlie place. And as my Dave would say,  just go with the girls. Unlike the romantic fireplace and chandeliers patisseries, Butter Baked Goods has a fun Southern Charm – filled with floral, color, and sparkles. Service here at Butter is friendly. Reservations are required. If you walk in, there probably won’t a table available. There are plenty of free street parking.

Cucumber and Cream Cheese Sandwiches: The lightest sandwiches. It is best to start with this sandwich otherwise the flavors of the other ones will overpower the light fresh feeling of this one. Or I suppose you can use this one as a palette cleanser.

Curry Croissant: This one is my favorite. I like the suitableness of curry, crunch the celery, cilantro and some chicken bites.

Egg Salad: Your very typical egg salad. But it is always one of my favorites.

Tuna Bun with a chip: This is a fun sandwich because it reminds me adding chips to my burgers. What? You’ve never tried this? You have to try it now! Add a few pieces of say a sea salt and pepper Ruffle chip to your next juicy burger!

Butter Baked Goods Butter Vancouver Afternoon Tea

Maple Pecan Scone: This is a sweet and nutty scone. Inside there are walnuts and I like how this is not too too sweet but still very earthy!

Butter Baked Goods Butter Vancouver Afternoon Tea

Raisin Scone: Remember picking and eating all the Kjeldsens Danish blue tin butter cookies? This is how I felt about these scones. Love!

By the time we got to the top tier, we were pretty much full. The dessert tier consists of lemon loafs, chocolate raspberry tarts, Earl Grey butter cookies with lemon cream filling, caramel chocolate bars, a vanilla and chocolate cupcakes. My favorite was the Early Grey butter cookie.

The Urban Tea Merchant Christmas + Brunch 2013

The Urban Tea Merchant Christmas + Brunch 2013

We came home from San Francisco to perennially confusing weather here in Vancouver. But whether its finding that perfect Sunday get go in a cozy sweater or that pair of Nike kicks to the gym, brunch always finds itself on my foodie itinerary. And I will leave no man (or dish) behind. So with that it brought us to The Urban Tea Merchant once again. This time, it wasn’t over tea nor finger sandwiches. But over runny yolk and smoked fish. Sure it’s nice to have an afternoon tea over Darjeeling and Pu’er tea, but doesn’t that Mimosa and Veuve Clicquot sounds exciting?

The Urban Tea Merchant Christmas + Brunch 2013

The Urban Tea Merchant Christmas + Brunch 2013

Set Brunch includes your choice of either

  • Orange juice 26
  • Tea-infused Mimosa 36
  • Champagne (Veuve Clicquot) 56

The Urban Tea Merchant Christmas + Brunch 2013

Eggs Benedict: Poached eggs with freshly made hollandaise and your choice of smoked salmon, spinach or ham. Served on toasted brioche and sprinkled with chives. I liked the toasted brioche because of the contrasting texture to the soft yolk. The hollandaise was creamy but towards the acidity side. What would’ve complemented well would be some addition of capers.

Seasonal teas are packaged in red, white, blue and gold. The Magic Christmas Tea comes as an elixir molten black hand-blown glass flask and encased in a royal velvet pouch. This could be the perfect gift to the tea-loving special someone. The Magic Christmas Tea: rooibos tea with citrus fruits and notes of dark chocolate. The Noel! Noel! Tea is a warm and gentle black tea with white Yin Zhen tea blend of fragrant spices and tones of clementine with rich Tahitian vanilla.

The Urban Tea Merchant Christmas + Brunch 2013

Scandinavian Smoked Fish: smoked trout, smoked salmon, smoked mackerel, buttered haddock & pickled herring served with toast and capers, red onion & in-house crème fraîche. The smokey, savory, and pickled fishes were delicious and not something you would see on an everyday brunch menu.

Urban Tea Merchant Mooncake 2013

Urban Tea Merchant Mooncake 2013

The Urban Tea Merchant Mid Autumn festival will be featuring their Moon Festival Tea Service between September 1st to 19th. This year, the mid-autumn festival is on September 19, 2013 where friends, family and lovers gather to admire the moon at its roundest and brightest – a symbol of fullness and complete. The good folks at The Urban Tea Merchant invited us back to catch up and show a little pinkies up.

Urban Tea Merchant Mooncake 2013

Tom (Co-Founder of The Urban Tea Merchant) showed us around and helped us pair a few teas with our Moon Festival Tea Service.
Urban Tea Merchant Mooncake 2013

We started off sampling some Silver Moon Tea. This special blend pairs exquisitely with the Moonlight Mooncake – made with white lotus paste with Silver Moon Tea, scattered wild berries & red fruit marmalade center.
Urban Tea Merchant Mooncake 2013

Left, Pu-Erh 1993 (Yunnan Matured Tea) – mellowed with age, developing a sweet and slightly earthy aromatic flavor. Right, a joyful Longevity Tea – a magical mélange of rare white teas which boasts a high percentage of downy silver tips picked entirely by hand. This blend envelops your senses with its precious essence as it infuses into a royal yellow cup, yielding a raw and crystalline flavor. Momentarily capturing the freshness of its inherent sparkle, this tea is created to tantalize tea-drinkers.

Urban Tea Merchant Mooncake 2013

During the month of September, TUTM features the Moon Festival Tea Services $46 pp. The platter features item favorites like:

miso-maple glazed sable fish in butter lettuce

  • Lapsang Souchong Tea chicken cone
  • smoked salmon with ponzu jelly
  • Royal Orchid Tea petite duck crepe
  • Silver Moon Tea red bean chilled soup
  • chevron strawberry
  • TWG Tea Mooncake

Urban Tea Merchant Mooncake 2013

There is a special theme to the design with a bunny and the crescent moon. There is a story about the Moon Goddess of Chang’e 嫦娥 which will be told at your table. For me, all I could think about was the song Fly Me To the Moon.

Urban Tea Merchant Mooncake 2013

Urban Tea Merchant Mooncake 2013

There are four flavors available for the mooncakes – some traditional and others fusion and catered to someone new to mooncakes.

  1. Constellation: Golden crust and infused with Longevity Tea and brown lotus filling with a hint of ginger, roasted melon seeds and salty egg yolk center. The most traditional available.
  2. Pagoda: Chocolate brown crust with juicy cranberries in a smooth lotus paste infused with malty notes of Chocolate Tea and a raspberry marmalade heart.
  3. Dragon: Luxurious red crust is filled with a velvety smooth lotus paste with nutty overtones of Brothers Club Tea, roasted peanuts and buttery peanut paste center. If you like PB&J, you’ll definitely love this!
  4. Moonlight: Lavish brown crust paired with smooth white lotus paste infused with Pu-Erh 1993 and sprinkled with black and white sesame seeds and an aromatic sesame paste center.

Secret Garden Tea Company, Vancouver (Kerrisdale)

Secret Garden Tea Company is another lovely high tea places in Kerrisdale, Vancouver – along the West Boulevard stretch. Also in this area is one of my favourites: Faubourg French Patisserie which specializes in authentic Parisian baked goods, pastries and desserts. If you search Best high tea in Vancouver or Best afternoon tea in Vancouver, more often than not Secret Garden Tea Company appears at the top. This place is well loved by many and you will even find a People Loves Us on Yelp badge stickered to the door. To be honest, I think it is a little over hyped.

SECRET GARDEN TEA CHRISTMAS 2012

SECRET GARDEN TEA CHRISTMAS 2012
Secret Garden Tea Company offers both seating in the front entrance by the windows and also a small enjoyment section in the back near the counter. Wooden chairs and tables line the space while teapots are served with quilted blankets and gleaming china (some where chipping and stained). The decor looks a tad dated with some country-side old Victorian-seque setting. Seat cushions need some new fluff, etc.

We were here to celebrate my friend’s baby shower. The soon to be mom is due in less than 3 weeks and what’s better than to indulge in festive to coincide with the Holiday Season. The Fancy Christmas Tea Afternoon Tea set was perfect.  Elegant three-tiered tray of miniature pastries, sweets, sweet scones, Devon cream, raspberry jam, and sandwiches are beautiful and delicious.

We arrived on time but our table was not ready. We waited another 15 mins before being seated while the waitresses cleared the tables. Watching them set the tables with a pregnant women standing was not ideal.  Inside I debated whether it would’ve been wiser to head to The Urban Tea Merchant. Their Holiday Tea Service would’ve been a wiser choice.

Sparkling Cranberry Spritzer: Holiday mocktails made with cranberry juice and soda.

SECRET GARDEN TEA CHRISTMAS 2012

SECRET GARDEN TEA CHRISTMAS 2012

The Top Tier: Sweets of cutely decorated Miniature Gingerbread Xmas Tree: cream cheese icing was not too sweet and was enjoyable against the spicy gingerbread. Such details. By favorite was the Secret Garden Shortbread Lemon Tart: the flaky crust and tart lemon was refreshing against the Mini Peppermint Cheesecake.

SECRET GARDEN TEA CHRISTMAS 2012

Second Tier: Scones served with Devonshire Cream and jam – light buttery scones paired with Devonshire cream is delicious. Pecan coconut bars were decadent and sweet.

SECRET GARDEN TEA CHRISTMAS 2012

Bottom Tier: Savories. Secret Garden Egg Pinwheels were sinfully soft and melts in your mouth. The right ratio of eggs and herbs. Roasted Turkey and Cranberry-Apricot Relish on Petite Bun: The bun reminds me of a Chinese barbecue steamed bun but the turkey and blue cheese leveled sharpness in the cranberry sauce. The toasted garlic brioche and roasted prawn was delicious. The savory and crunchy texture went great with the sundried tomatoe paste.

Overall our experience here was enjoyable except in the end as they tried to rush us out with some attitude. While we tried to sneak in a few photos with the Mommy-to-be, the waitress told us we had about 5 mins. Did they forget we were seated late initially?   Perhaps it wasn’t wise for us to settle the bill early – they no longer needed to ‘earn’ their tips.

Reservations can be made for: 12pm, 2:15pm and 4:30pm, every day of the week
