Shirakawa Japanese Restaurant Gastown is located in the historic Blood Alley next to L’Abattoir. Open since May, I often wonder which restaurant took over the space from Boneta. We finally decided to give this place a try and I’m quite happy that we did. Shirakawa by Itoh Dining is a modern teppanyaki eatery, owned and operated by Keisuku Itoh and Takuya Motohashi. Itoh holds a sommelier certificates in wine and sake and is under the mentorship and guidance with world-renowned Chef Nobu Matsuhisa. Shirakawa Japanese restaurant specializes in Japanese kappo, sushi, teppan grilled high-end Kuroge Wagyu Beef from Japan.
WAGYU TATAKI 18″ snake river wagyu beef, garlic soy and walla walla onions. Beef is tender and very fresh. The onions has been rinsed to take away bite and its sharp taste. I do like myself some raw bloody, beef.
HAMACHI CARPACCIO 16: thinly sliced yellowtail finished with kaiware sprouts and yuzu kosho.
TOFU GOMAAE SALADA 10: fried tofu and mixed greens dressed with black and white sesame. Our waitress recommend this salad and she did not disappoint. The house made sesame sauce is very fragrant and highlights the spinach greens and lightly breaded agesdashi tofu. I’m just so glad this gomaae salad isn’t that wring out spinach you see at your typical AYCE diners.
HOTATE NIGIRI 4 each: I often like to order this as a dessert to finish off a meal. In tonight’s case, we couldn’t help ourselves to encore this twice. Fatty. Sweet. Scallops. Splashed with some nirigi soy.
TORO NIGIRI 3.75 each: A fatty piece of tuna belly splashed with nigiri sauce.
BUTA RICE 12: fatty pork belly fried rice. This very fragrant rice had us wanting more. Each piece of rice seems to be coated with pork fat but yet it is still dry.
GASTOWN GYOZA 7: pork and mixed vegetables served with jalapeño miso. Although the skin is crispy and gyoza filling was quite juicy, this dish didn’t quite sing to us. The jalapeno miso sauce was spicy but flat. Another option is to request the ponzu soy sauce. For us, we also found it too salty.
TEBA 8: fried ginger soy marinated chicken wings. A lightly breaded and flaky wing is how I like it.
We have high hopes for Shirakawa Japanese Restaurant. It is always exciting to find modern teppanyaki restaurant that also cares about maintaining traditional Japanese culinary methods.
