So as we mentioned last time, Shanghai Morning Restaurant 小南國上海小吃 is now the new Chen’s Shanghai Kitchen 白玉蘭餐館 and we were ecstatic to have a new favorite place to satisfy our XLB cravings. Oh those juicy soup dumplings. Shanghai Morning isn’t just a one song wonder! It has a lot of other delicacies to offer. That’s why we brought Dave’s folks here for dinner so we can go crazy and order!
Smoked Duck with Chinese Tea: A specialty dish with crispy skin, tender juicy meat and a unique smokey flavour. It is well seasoned and perhaps a little salty for some people, but it is delicious!
Smoked Fish: This cold appetizer dish is marinated with dark soy sauce, shaoxing wine, sugar , five spices and a dash of sesame oil. A refreshing dish to start off any meal! Becareful sometimes there are many small bones, so eat with caution!
Drunken Chicken: This chicken is cold, it is juicy, and drenched in wine. The marinating liquid for this bird is 50% chicken broth and 50% rice wine. Although regarded as an appetizer, there’s not reason to label this to a started. It is very good as a main course, especially for the portion sized provided here.
Green soy beans, bean curd strips and pickled cabbages: A light vegetable dish with light seasoning and slight tangy kick from the preserved cabbages. A crowd pleasure with the more senior crowds.
Shanghai style pork meat ball: They call this red braised (soy-braised) lion’s head meatballs. The name derives from the shape of the meatball which is supposed to resemble the head of the lion and the cabbage (or other vegetables), which is supposed to resemble the lion’s mane. To me, it just looks like giant meat balls with bak choy! But this is a rich dish, full of soy flavouring and sauce.
Pan fried buns 生煎包: Again, these are like pan fried XLB only with a slightly thicker skin. Theses buns are never disappointing.
Shanghai pan fried noodles: A less greasy version then some other restaurants. Shanghai thick noodles tossed with Chinese mushrooms, cabbages and soy. I like how the boodles are bouncy and not soggy.
Soup Dumplings aka Xiao Long Bao 小籠包. Juicy!
Chili Wontons: Basically wonton swimming in a sweet chili sauce.
Noodles in Bean Sauce: Bean sprouts, bean sauce tossed with some shredded pork than added onto a light chicken broth with noodles. A light and healthy bowl of noodle soup. Add some spicy bean chili for extra heat.
Shanghai Morning Restaurant is a delightful place that I will frequent regularly. Prices are cheaper and gives me a better option than just Shanghai River.
