New Szechuan Restaurant 新四川飯店 is considered a dive. This hole in the wall is located in Burquitlam, closer to Port Moody on a hidden side street (Cottonwood Ave) beside a grocery store and Tae Kwon Doe studio.
New Szechuan may be a dive and certainly isn’t “new” but one would definitely consider it a “hidden gem”!
With only a handful of tables and 2 servers at most, this place is modestly “decorated”.
Price/Entrée: $10-20 Out of 5… (1: Don’t bother —> 5: Excellent)
Table clothes are plastic layered on the table so they can just rip it off for the next customer. I find this quite funny actually.
Everything is modestly priced with a variety of popular traditional dishes.
Spicy Free Range Chicken 口水雞
Unlike Golden Szechuan (click) this dish is finely shredded chicken dry tossed in diced chilli, chilli oil, cilantro and peanuts. Medium heat is quite spicy. But I love spice!
Spicy Sliced Cattle Stomach & Beef 夫妻肺片
Thinly sliced tripe and marinated beef slices tossed in cilantro and chilli. Tripe texture is chewy with and delicious as it soaks in the all the spices and flavouring.
Spicy boiled beef 水煮牛肉
An alternate version of spicy boiled fish 水煮魚 where it is swimming in a sea of red chilli oil.
Served in a mini pot with a flame underneath to keep cooking to increase the intensity of the flavour. Be sure to give it a try if you love spicy food or like to challenge yourself.
Spicy Dry Chicken Szechuan Style 辣仔雞
Stir Fried Bitter Melon 苦瓜
Similar to the braised string beans 四川乾煸四季豆, this is made with bitter melon. Not everyone is a fan of bitter melon since they find it too bitter. But I can assure you if cooked properly it is quite delightful to eat! Plus there are plenty of benefits when consuming this.
Scientists find properties of bitter melon a powerful treatment for Type 2 diabetes as well it expels “heat” 熱氣 relieving fatigue and illuminating.
Deep Fried Rolls 銀絲捲
You can order this either steamed or deep fried. I prefer deep fried since it’s a lil crunchy and I like the texture that offsets the soft and warm center.

The remaining soft center you can drip into condensed milk or mix with savoury items.
Even tho there is absolutely zero ambiance in this dive. The food is quite comforting and delicious. It sure beats Lucky Gate in the Tri-City area and is more flavourful than Golden Szechuan in Richmond. Here I don’t feel ripped off and it’s nice and close to home.
See it’s so good we cleared everything on the table and drank all the chili oil. JK, we were in a hurry and packed it to go.
Next time I come here I want to try the Spicy Garlic Pork Belly – I hear it melts in your mouth.
