What’s this MoMa place inside a strip mall on Cambie and Sexsmith road in Richmond? Is this another Chinese restaurants playing on the Trojan wooden horse? Is it another Chinese restaurant, Japanese restaurant or Korean? MoMa is actually a contemporary french bistro opened by Henry Mok and Xin Mao – hence the name MoMa Richmond Contemporary French Bistro. Both chefs attended Art Institute of Vancouver. Although still a young restaurant MoMa seems to be making some headway on the internet. On a rainy Thursday night, the MoMa Contemporary Bistro is filling up. Thanks to OpenTable you can make reservations online and earn 100 points. We welcome this affordable casual French-Italian fare to the Richmond restaurant food scene.

Tonight rather impromptu and I did not have my camera on me. The lighting is dim inside so you will have to forgive my moody pictures. Luckily the food didn’t need a boost of #vsocam or @instagram filters. Unlike my photos.

Steamed Clams 13: sake miso broth, wakame, scallions. The aromas upon arriving smelt delicious. The broth was rich with sake and savory enough with a hint of miso. There were a nice handful of plump juicy clams.

Smoked Brome Lake Duck Breast 21: asian aromatic glaze, lentils, salsa verde. The duck breast was tender yet juicy laced with smokiness. The skin is crispy. The citrus glaze brightens the duck. I love how lentils, snap peas and onions added some bite. Though I do wish the size would have been more generous.

BC Sablefish 22: miso crusted, ficassee of cabbage and corn. The fatty piece of sablefish was succulent, miso cured and sous vide. Although mouth watering and melting in the mouth, the skin is torched lightly and mirrors the smokiness found from the Duck Breast. All this fish hangs out on a bed of sauteed kernel and cabbage.

PS – it would be nice for the waitress to be more descriptive about our dishes than just “Here is the duck breast. Here is the sablefish” just sayin
