Mission Restaurant located on 2042 W 4th Avenue, Vancouver. It is another casual modern fine dining restaurants serving Pacific Northwest Canadian fare. The decor is charming and intrigues bypasses with its white washed walls, arched cathedral ceilings and sunken window seats. Owner and Chef Curtis Luk comes from Alum of Top Chef Canada (second season) and worked with Trevor Bird (just a few doors down at Fable Restaurant).
The menu concept at Mission is farm to table with fresh local ingredients that is seasonal with optional wine pairings. Upon being seated, you will be offered two tastings menus: Vegetarian and Meat/Seafood. Wine pairings +30 or Reserve pairings +45.
There is also a seasonal A La Carte menu. We were not offered this option until we enquired about it. Our server suggested that we do one or the other because it would “disrupt the flow”. To be honest, we were a little bewildered and felt constraint in our dining options.
Also I’m not quite sure why they don’t simply present both options upfront. Anyways, If you don’t see that on the table, be sure to check with the server!
Feature Terrine 10: with a Branston pickle jelly layer on top to cut fat and brightens up the fish. At first it tastes like a beet jelly compote but made from a variety of vegetables including carrots, onions and cauliflower pickled in a sauce made from vinegar, tomato, apple and spices.
Black garbanzo hummus 8: A sweeter and smokier hummus that most earthy renditions. Served with pickles and sourdough toast.
Braised pork tortellini 14: with diced apple, chanterelles and a black vinegar sauce. A comforting and inviting dish perfect for cold, rainy, Autumn nights.
Fried Eggplant 11: One of my favorite dishes of the night. Humble ingredients with bold flavors and textures. I love the smokiness of the fried eggplant with that umami miso mayo salty glaze. Mustard greens on the side.
I’m looking forward to coming back during the day to try their tasting menu. I think we will need to order one of each. We like variety and options! Don’t you?
