Ho Yuen Kee Restaurant 何源記, Vancouver

Ho Yuen Kee

Ho Yuen Kee Restaurant 何源記 is another good Chinese restaurant located on Fraser / 46th. You don’t usually hear people talking about it, street parking is a nightmare to find and service is slow. They are famous for their Lobster with Sticky Rice and for comfort Cantonese meals.

Our dinner started off with daily soup of the day: A watery bowl without a lot of dimension.

Ho Yuen Kee
Squab: The bird was tender and the skin was crispy. But I still think Dragon View was much better.

Ho Yuen Kee
Mayo Stir Fried Prawns with Walnuts: Giant prawns smothered with mayo and sugar candied walnuts. A crowd favorite for all ages.

Ho Yuen Kee
Bean Curd with Spinach: A wet dish with some soup at the bottom to keep the bean curd and spinach moist. A light tasting flavorless dish (great if you are watching your sodium level).

Ho Yuen Kee
Cod and Seasonal Greens (Broccoli): The fish was fresh and was glad to known my taste buds were still working

Ho Yuen Kee
Rose Pan Fried Black Cod: A lightly seared black cod was buttery. Marinade was light (but of course not with rose petals – they take the name for it’s color).

Lobster with Lotus Leaf + Sticky Rice MP $19.80/lbs + 7.75 rice: Our lobster was around 2 lbs and we were told it was not enough for our table of 4. We got suckered into doubling our order. The presentation was beautiful as it came in a bamboo steamer with lotus leaf lining the bottom. The lobster was fresh and the scallions and ginger was well proportioned. In the end there was actually way too much food given the rice and other dishes ordered.

I probably wouldn’t be rushing back here to Ho Yuen Kee Restaurant. I just live too far from it.  I still find their food somewhat greasy and flat.
