During the winter months, Alaskan king crabs are commercially harvested for your enjoyment in a 3-4 course meal. Legs are usually steamed with clear broth (清蒸), minced garlic (蒜蓉) or egg white and Hua Diao Wine (花雕蛋白蒸蟹)… Of course you can always option to deep fry with salt and pepper, but why would you want to waste the sweet essence of this tasty delicacy?

  1. Legs served 1 or 2 ways
  2. Save the sauce! Serve up the essence with thin/thick egg noodles, E-Mein, etc…
  3. Knuckles – great for stir frying with salt and pepper, premium soy sauce and onions,
  4. Crab Shell – baked rice with Portuguese curry cream sauce

These crustaceans range between 8-12 lbs (depending on season) and requires 6+ dining partners. During this time, thousands of hungry mouth-wateringmobs wait eagerly to be seated to drop a few hundred dollars just for a taste of this annual event.

Aside from Red Star Seafood 鴻星海鮮酒家, The Jade Seafood Restaurant 玉庭軒魚翅海鮮酒家, we often like to go to Excelsior Restaurant 怡園粉麵茶餐廳… She may not be pretty to look at and may not offer the most comfortable seating, but Excelsior is one of those that charms you with their seafood. Word on the street has it that they have a new management team and their “special” sauce has a new twist. We are here tonight to verify that… btw, the crab meat should just slide off the open shell easily… if it sticks, it is overcooked.


By 7pm most of the larger crabs were already gone and we were left with a 8.2lbs beauty. Legs served 2 ways clear broth (清蒸) and egg white and Hua Diao Wine (花雕蛋白蒸蟹).

Clear broth is light and lets the crab essence shine.

Rice wine brightens the fresh sweetness of the crab meat. Egg white coats it like a blanket and adds texture.

Stir Fried knuckles in House Special sauce. This is a very flavorful sauce loaded with spices, herbs, and dried shrimps. The crab is dry tossed. It seems the sauce is heavy on black pepper now and there doesn’t seem to be as much dried shrimps as there used to be… Nonetheless, this is a must try along with the Special Dry Curry also.

Fragrant and creamy. Let the crab flavor seep in. I see some people order Tomato Sauce but really why would you want to overpower the crabby goodness? Save the yin-yang rice for another day…


For dessert, green bean soup is served…

We left with our pants a little tighter and stomachs a little rounder… good night my friends, I believe I have food coma.
