Departure Portland is a high end restaurant opened by former runner up Top Chef Greggory Gourdet. The restaurant offers a beautiful view of the city being on the 15th floor of the luxury hotel The Nines. It is a quite step away from Nike (Portland is home to Nike ICYMI) and quick walk from where we stayed at Hotel Rose Pineapple Hospitality.

The entrance greeted us with a colorful futuristic aesthetics. Although Departure is Portland’s sky-high retreat, it is still relaxed and un-pretentious. Walk in with your athleisure and button-up – it’s all the same welcoming service.

Starting off the evening with a corner seat near the window we ordered a ginger beer based spicy cocktail and a Portland craft beer. Departure menu focuses on street food tapas for sharing and Asian fusion flavors.

Tasho Macho 12: A Thai chili infused vodka, Thai basil, lime and ginger beer… A deliciously spicy cocktail.

Crispy Pork Belly 13: that melt in your mouth pork belly fat glazed with sweet and sour cherry, ginger, pumpkin seeds. I liked the crispy skin with that tender and fatty belly.

Big Eye Tuna Poke 17: Fresh tuna poke with avocado, yuzu, chili and sesame crisp. Presentation is underwhleming since all the gorgeous poke is hidden by the sesame chips.

Departure Wings 14: one of my favorite dishes of the evening. Semi-boneless wings with all the meat bound on one bone. It has crispy skin, tender moist meat and a glazed with sweet chili.

Seafood and Green Vegetable Tom Kha 26: A subtlely spicy and fiery Thai coconut soup with great flavors of lemongrass, ginger and lime leaves layered with Dungeness crab, rockfish, and shrimp.

Shumai 8: These pork dumplings reminds me of steamed beef balls we typically order at our favorite Chinese Dim Sum restaurant. These shumai were not my favorite perhaps it was too meaty and salty. It didn’t have the textures of Chinese mushrooms nor shrimp to complement. Served with vinegar shoyu and sharp Chinese mustard.
