Deer Garden Signatures 鹿園魚湯米線, Richmond

Deer Garden Signatures has recently expanded their operations from 2nd floor Alexandra location (2015-8580 Alexandra Road) to Continental Mall where parkings are plentiful. No need to fight for a spot and circle for hours! The restaurant is newly renovated, spacious and bright… A great destination for lunch or a quick bite one would think….

Perhaps it is because it just grand opened, service is terribly slow! I came here with a colleague during lunch hour – arrived just before noon and ordered 2 bowls of noodles. One came about 15 mins after while the 2nd never arrived until we inquired about it. The second bowl did not arrive until 12:40pm. The waitress was walking around to various different tables with our Laska, walking to and from the kitchen before arriving at the correct table – our table. By this time, the noodles were cold and we our patience level was shot.

Unfortunately I wish that I had all the time in the world for lunch, but alas I’m a poor working citizen. By this time the line up was out the door… To contribute to the madness, the interior space maximization is a fail; although spacious, the 6 person table does not maximize occupancy – there were a lot of parties of 3 seating on a 6 person table. A smart thing would be to impose 4 person table and 2 person table; mix and match as occupancy increase or decrease… anyways that’s another story.

The Milk Tea was too sweet, lacked kick and has a weird sour after-taste that lasted for hours…

The service was slow and unprofessional; tables without utensils, servers pretending not to see you when you flag them down – even when you want to pay. Chili oil were served in little plastic cups you see in food courts. Cold drinks are served in plastic to-go cups (actually this was not a bad idea since usually we can’t finish it and take it away anyways). Esthetically not please however.

Apologies (actually not really) if I appear to harsh on this newly expanded Deer Garden but I feel that as customers we needn’t have to ‘break them in’ or along for them to ‘oil their engines’.

Tong Yum Gong with fish balls, fish slices and tofu puffs:

Delish Thai styled hot and sour shrimp broth. Everything about this soup was generally good except it seems that the ingredients has been downsized.

Laksa Noodles with fish slices and beef brisket slices:

Laksa is an unique soup-base which blends Chinese and Malay cooking styles together. This coconut based curry tasty broth is missing curry and coconut freshness. It tastes creamy, milky, watered down. Fish slices are fishy and has a very “frozen” tastes – something that has been in the freezer too long…

Chicken Wings (side dish) for $1.50 extra

Nothing special, just your regular deep fried chicken. Again downsized from 4 wings per dish to only 3… so that’s 50 cents per

The positives:

  • Their menu is extensive with large selection of noodles, snacks, and drinks
  • Reasonable prices
  • Mix and match
  • No MSG
  • Plentiful parking spaces in a central location
  • Some Hong Kong café items
  • Customize / mix and match noodle bowls
  • Mini combos available

The negatives:

  • Downsized of ingredients and quality
  • Broths are watered down
  • Terribly slow services
  • Cash only
