Taking over the space which used to occupy Hon’s Wun-Tun House is Chef Tony Seafood Restaurant 頤東大酒樓 in Richmond. It is located inside Empire Centre where the best claypot rice James Snacks 占士叻煲仔飯 and Double Double Restaurant 老油條大牌檔 is. When you first enter, it’s hard not to be taken aback slightly. The decor is flamboyant and boarder line tacky – tube light pillars, chandeliers, and karaoke private rooms. The giant TV broadcasting drool worthy food photography has you subtly biting off more than you can chew, literally. Service is friendly and prompt. Prices are steep and the portions modest.  The flavors and ingredients used are colorful.

Deep fried radish ball with bonito flakes: deep fried shrimp past with shredded radish makes this a little lighter and sweeter to chew.

Seaweed and shrimp spring roll: if you look closely there is only two spring rolls for a dish over $5. The combination although nice was not memorable.

Pan fried chives rice crepe: a thinly sliced rice crepe. Flavors are good, but portions a little too small.

Traditional steamed egg sponge cake: made with red sugar instead of yellow. This light airy sponge cake is delicious!

Stir fry “A” Choy with fresh black beans.

Shrimp matsutake dumplings: a touch of truffle oil in your everyday shrimp dumpling. The shrimp are bouncy and the skin is thin.

Steam marinated tripe and tendon: Soft and tender.

Bitter gourd and shredded chicken rice noodle: bitter gourds are infused in the rice noodle iteself – hence the green hue. This is something different than what other places offer. I do like the slight bitterness.

 

 

 

Chef Tony has good presentation and items are visually pleasing. Some everyday items are made premium with use of adding truffle oil, etc. Personally, I prefer my Ha Gaw simple and my pork dumpling as is with a dash of tobiko on top. This probably won’t become my go-to dim sum restaurant. And, I’d probably like to avoid this horrendous parking lot as best I can.
