Alleluia Cafe Richmond 歡欣餐廳 is a Hong Kong Cafe in Richmond. Often found inside these diners and cha chaan tang 茶餐廳 in Hong Kong, is their version of steak house. There is a systematic way of ordering this set meal that gives you the option of choosing (might have variations depending on restaurant: There isn’t an exact history of this style of restaurant. From memory of childhood, the first restaurant that pioneered this movement is Garden Restaurant Mong Kok. I haven’t been there for 20+ years, but it still remains at the same location.
Its concept is quite simple, and the attraction is giving the patron multiple choices in what they order. You start with the proteins. Depending on the protein, you can choose 2-3 items in that subcategory. Then you choose the sauce, and this is where I find most interesting. The classic choice of sauces is black pepper and onion. There are also mushroom, garlic, and gravy. What is interesting is the name for the other sauces. A restaurant such as the one featured has sauces like Spanish, Japanese, and Paris. You don’t really know what’s in the sauce unless you ask.
Next you choose between rice and spaghetti. Then you pick your soup, where the majority of the time its between Chinese, and Western style soup of the day. The variation of Chinese soups changes daily. For the Western Soup choices, 99% of the time its between cream of mushroom, or Russian borscht. This is standardized globally.
Finally you choose your beverage. You can choose a variety of drinks served hot or cold. This is another topic that can be featured. The most popular drink would be Hong Kong style Lemon Tea, or Milk Tea. If you can’t choose between the two, get a Yuanyang 鴛鴦, which is mixing the two together. There’s a whole range of other beverages you can choose. Ovaltine, Horlicks, Lemon Water, Lemon Honey Water, ETC. I will feature beverages on another post, it’s another large topic.
Alleluia Cafe Richmond 歡欣餐廳 was my official go to place. I can name most of the items in all their menus because I used go there 4-7 times a week. Important information you need to know are:
- Discounted meals start after 9PM and goes till closing time of 2AM
- 3 types of meal choices: individual value meals with drinks included, pick you Chinese dish plus drink and soup, and the steak menu that we are focusing on.
- Try not to come at peak times, there is limited parking.
We order two steak combo meals and one Chinese Dish.
First steak meal combo: Rack of lamb + Ox tail in red wine sauce with onion sauce with rice
This was a Chinese dish combo featuring dual mushroom with fried bean curd. This dish is vegetarian, and tasty. The bean curd absorbs all the juices, along side the mushroom which also has the same effect.
We all chose Chinese Soup of the day, which was Carrot Soup like mom makes.
The cold milk tea that came with the combo. Best of all, Free refills for all their hot / cold drinks!
There are so much to talk about in a humble cha chaan tang. It took me a post just to showcase a style of the restaurant. This might be an option to all you readers when you are too busy to cook at home. You have to understand that the majority of people in cities such as Hong Kong do no have the time to cook at all. They rely on restaurants like this for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and everything else in between. For more recommended choices, please refer to the list below.
